The Safety Specialist will work with the Manager of Safety to assist in the day-to-day organization and guidance of the AltaLink Safety Advisors. The Safety Specialist will also work with our employees and contractor community to ensure effective safety systems and processes are in place. This position will lead and/or participate in incident investigations and audits, guide and support line managers and safety advisors on safety issues related to the AltaLink Safety Management System. As well, they will review and make recommendations on standards, procedures, work planning documents and maintain accurate up to date records.
Responsibilities
Day to Day activities will include:
day-to-day organization and guidance to a team of safety professionals
lead by demonstrating the required behaviors, attitudes, and mindset to further develop a strong corporate safety culture
provide guidance to line management and workers on safety issues related to the AltaLink safety management systems
assist in the development of written standards, procedures, presentations, and training
perform assessments of reports, work planning documents, and other written material and provide feedback
assist line management leadership in the development and/or review of safe work planning documentation
lead or participate in incident investigations using AltaLink standards and investigation protocols
perform formal periodic audits and observations of project and operational safety systems, processes, and subsequent field execution
work with the contractor community to assist with the creation of effective safety systems
combine and maintain records associated with the responsibility of the position
Qualifications
Related technologist diploma, and a combination of relevant education and experience.
Occupational Health and Safety Certificate or diploma from an accredited university
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation considered and asset
National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation considered an asset
Minimum of 5 years experience in a safety role
Experience organizing and leading a large group in a team environment
Experience in the electrical transmission industry would be an asset
Experience in providing oversight to EPC organizations and contractor organizations as an owner representative
Experience with safety systems and field activity audits
Experience in public speaking, presentation creation, presenting, and meeting facilitation
Experience coaching, mentoring, and development of staff
Knowledge of the OH&S Act, Regulations, and Safety Codes Act
Knowledge o f safety management systems and their business application
Ability to research complex subject matter and summarize the information
Strong problem solving and conflict resolution abilities
Good communication skills, written and verbal
Ability to work collaboratively with individuals and large work groups
Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
