Reporting to the Supervisor, Health Information Management, Admitting Clerks provide the initial contact for persons requiring hospital medical services. They are responsible for interviewing incoming patients and gathering all relevant information required for admission including personal demographics, medical history, health insurance information and method of payment. They will then direct individuals to the appropriate hospital department for necessary tests or procedures, scheduled surgery or emergency treatment, and in some cases will be responsible for processing payment.
High School graduation or equivalent.
Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Experience in clerical duties, preferably in a hospital setting.
A current and original Criminal Record Check is a requirement of all external applicants in order to be considered for a position.
Ability to:
- Type (50 wpm) and operate a computer terminal;
- Explain procedures, and obtain and document factual information;
- Follow written and verbal instructions;
- Function in a dynamic work environment; perform duties both independently and as a team member;
- Respond quickly under pressure
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
- Train new staff as required; multi-task.
- Control stressful situations in a calm, assertive manner.
