Casual Work – 8 Hour Shift
The Jean C. Barber Lodge (JCBL) serves as “home away from home” for cancer patients who must travel to Vancouver for out-patient treatment and consultation. JCBL offers nursing supervision, caring volunteer support and quality, smoke-free, affordable accommodation. Lodge Nurses are responsible for the on-going supervision and support of oncology out-patient resident care and the security and safety of the Lodge building.
1. Ensures a safe Lodge environment by:
- Adhering to established emergency procedures and safety practices;
- Identifying high risk and emergency situations and initiating appropriate action.
- Documenting unusual occurrences.
- Accepting accountability for management of Lodge as delegated by Lodge Supervisor.
2. Provides and coordinates nursing care consistent with CRNBC standards and Lodge philosophy by:
- Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care.
- Providing patient and family health teaching, including interpreting treatment plans and identifying support services available through the Canadian Cancer Society and the community.
- Liaising with the British Columbia Cancer Agency and community health professionals as appropriate.
- Implementing and evaluating quality improvement initiatives.
- Following Lodge policies and procedures regarding referrals, admissions, transfers and discharges.
- Maintaining accurate patient and nursing records.
- Identifying own learning needs and engaging in activities to meet those needs.
3. Facilitates volunteers in promoting a supportive environment and helpful services within the Lodge by:
- Fostering good communication between staff and volunteers.
- Participating in training and orientation of volunteers.
- Lending support and guidance to volunteers on a daily basis.
- Seeking volunteer input regarding all aspects of Lodge operations.
- Referring to volunteer services.
- Acknowledging volunteer contributions.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
1. Knowledge relates to the initiatives, policies and goals of one functional area (Lodge Administrative Services) and primary knowledge of nursing.
2. This position also involves some understanding of more than one functional area and an:
- Understanding of departmental objectives, policies and reporting relationships
- Understanding of related activities/initiatives of other organizations.
3. Knowledge of community-based economic, political and socio-cultural conditions.
4. Presents, explains or discusses information with others who have limited subject matter knowledge regarding details of the residents and of the Lodge building.
5. Must be able to discuss and explain details of patients’ condition, symptoms and counselling.
6. Must be able to problem-solve regarding Residents and Lodge building.
7. Basic PC use and standard office equipment.
8. Level C certification CPR required.
9. Knowledge of WHIMIS and Food Safe Practices
10. Experience working with volunteers preferred.
11. Experience in, or knowledge of oncology.
12. Flexible work schedule required.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
1. Formal technical or management training from a recognized educational institute OR equivalent longer period of job-related experience.
2. Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, licensed to practise in BC.
3. Minimum of two years experience is preferred.
