Reporting to the Pathology Technician II / Medical Laboratory Technologist ll and lll, Supervisor or Manager, this position provides assistance to Pathologists in performing necropsy and gross tissue examination. Given that the activity of the Pathology Technician resides in medically delegated acts, these individuals are directly responsible to pathologists for the quality of their work and will work in close collaboration with and under the direct supervision of pathologist medical staff in all matters relating to tissue examination.
Performs gross tissue dissection:
o Assist in the preparation and performance of surgical specimen dissection by assuring appropriate specimen accessioning in the laboratory information system.
o Obtain pertinent clinical information.
o Carry out gross dissection of surgical and biopsy tissue specimens according to standard procedures in the surgical gross room up to and including level 5 and 6s. Obtain pertinent clinical information.
o Prepares frozen tissue sections under direction of staff Pathologists.
o Responsible for tumor banking and ancillary testing.
o Takes quality photographs of tissue specimens.
o Stores, retrieves, files and discards specimens as per retention guidelines.
o Operates, maintains and performs basic troubleshooting of all instruments, equipment and procedures.
o Performs all quality control and quality assurance practices and maintains records as required.
o Observes and is aware of all safety precautions and practices including WHMIS.
o Recognizes and follows-up erroneous or unusual findings and problem solves related problems and communicates these to the Supervisor.
o Participates in the training and orientation of new staff and students and in evaluating their progress.
o Performs general clean up and maintains optimal supply inventory.
o Prepares simple reagents and tissue decalcification.
o Maintains work area and ensure equipment and instruments are in good working order.
May be required to perform autopsy services
Maintains a thorough knowledge of grossing instruments, applications, methodology and theory. Stay abreast of relevant technological changes and improvements.
Other related duties as required.

Key Skills and Aptitudes
Post-secondary degree or diploma in a relevant medical field such as medical laboratory technology, physician or foreign training with Pathology specialty requirement.
Ability to work with deceased patients.
Applicants must have a minimum of 3 to 5 years recent grossing experience including the ability to gross level 5 and 6 specialty specimens.
Ability to prioritize and make decisions independently in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Ability to handle a mult-itask environment quickly and efficiently.
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, flexible and adaptable.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Strong analytical reasoning skills and decision making skills are required.
Proven written and verbal communication.
Data entry and computer skills essential.
Must be adaptable and have the ability to work in an environment where organizational change and service expectations are continuously evolving
Any Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA score of Benchmark 8, completed within the last 6 months.
