For 115 years, Carefor Health & Community Services, a registered charity and not-for-profit organization, has been keeping families together longer at home by providing home health care and community support services. From nursing to personal care, assisted living options and respite services to support caregivers and families with loved ones living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, Carefor services continue to meet the needs of the local communities we serve across the Champlain region of Ottawa, Pembroke-Renfrew County & Eastern Counties. Carefor is a fully accredited healthcare organization that has expanded in recent years to over 1,000 staff and 35 million in annual revenue.
Carefor has an immediate opening for a Controller to be located at our head office in Ottawa and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer. The Controller position has a wide range of responsibilities including managing daily financial operations, preparing financial information for strategic decision making, managing a staff of six in payables, receivables, accounting and payroll operations and ensuring compliance with accounting and Canadian regulations. The position also provides coordination of the close and accounting processes with finance staff at branch offices and the preparation of accurate and timely local and combined financial information and reports for provincial stakeholders, management and the Board.
The Controller is responsible for investment portfolios, banking, annual budgets, variance reporting, preparing for and managing interim and year end externals audits and the preparation and presentation of financial results for programs in Ottawa. In addition to evaluating and implementing best practices in the areas of quality and operating efficiency, the Controller will work closely with the IT Systems group to perform gap analysis and identity appropriate technologies and solutions. The Controller will also develop and implement GAAP policies and procedures for NPO organizations, oversee CRA not for profit accounting and reporting requirements as well as funder and ministry reporting (LHIN, Stats Can, etc.).
You will need to be an accomplished professional with a minimum of 6-8 years of in depth practical experience and knowledge of all aspects of financial management, fund accounting, reporting and financial leadership in a multi-program/multi-site environment. The position requires a motivated individual, complemented by a University degree in Business/Accounting and a professional accounting designation - Chartered professional Accountant (CPA) / Chartered Accountant (CA) preferred. You will have sound knowledge of payroll requirements, industry practices and ability to consult with staff and advisors to analyze problems and propose logical solutions. Experience with accounting and reporting for not for profit registered charities will be an asset. The ideal candidate for this hands-on role will be able to work effectively under pressure in a decentralized environment with a wide range of stakeholders.
