The Corporate office has an opening for a Category Manager – Produce. This is a newly created position in the Produce Department.

Qualifications: The following are preferred or desired unless specifically stated;

  • 4 year college degree (Business/Marketing a plus) or equivalent industry experience preferred
  • 4 years retail backstage management experience including buying
  • 1-2 years retail store and/or field merchandiser experience beneficial
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent negotiating skills and experience in developing win-win relationships
  • Excellent written and oral skills
  • Marketing and creative skills
  • Leadership skills
  • High degree of initiative and results orientation
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple initiatives
  • Excellent team and interpersonal skills
  • Some travel required

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to;


  • Ensure banner profitability and attainment of all financial targets
  • Develop and execute forecasts to meet financial targets
  • Annual review and management of CORE agreements

Product Life Cycle

  • Manage effective product life cycle (listings, de-listings, innovation and seasonal programs)
  • Monitor sell through performance/ performance of promotional and seasonal programs
  • Communicate and work effectively with procurement to achieve overall targets
  • Maximize category performance through the introduction of new and innovative products


  • Develop and manage category/ item pricing subject to strategic pricing philosophies loyalty program data
  • Determine ad item selection and pricing based on banner financial criteria and event calendar


  • Ensure all elements of the ads are correct and delivering on category strategies
  • Develop and execute promotional plan
  • Work with Merchandising teams to develop effective promotions based on merchandising strategies for the stores
  • Negotiate event participation
  • Review pricing requests from retail
  • Determine retails, loyalty promotions, forecast volume and gross profits for each product on ad


  • Participate in the development and coordination of plan-o-grams and layout schematics based on store model (section sizes), plan-o-gram philosophy and the category plan
  • Ensure product placement is based on consumer decision trees and trends in order to maximize profitable sales

Vendor Relations

  • Manage all vendor interaction and negotiations
  • Optimize vendor investment to deliver on sales targets (marketing and trade spends)
  • Develop productive, proactive and consultative business relationships
  • Leverage vendor relationships to maximize customer and category insight

Communication/ Employee Engagement

  • Ensure effective communication within the department and with all other departments in the stores and office
  • Communicate effectively and continuously with Director of Merchandising and Director Category Management
  • Work with National/Regional teams on private label opportunities

Salary: Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
