The City of Brooks requires a Building Safety Codes Officer. This is a permanent full time position responsible for administering, reviewing and enforcing the Safety Codes Act and Alberta Building Code including reviewing plans, issuing permits and inspecting building projects for compliance. The applicant will process development and sign permits, as assigned, to ensure compliance with the Land Use Bylaw and Sign Bylaw. This position will include enforcement in areas of Building Infractions as well as Development related matters.

The successful applicant must have completed the twelfth (12th) school grade, or equivalent, preferably supplemented by a recognized journeyman carpenter certification. It is preferred for the incumbent to possess graduation from a recognized two (2) year, post-secondary technological course in building construction, engineering, drafting, or other similar discipline and must possess thorough understanding of current construction practices and techniques. The applicant is required to have detailed working knowledge of Alberta Building Code, Alberta Fire Code and relevant City bylaws and policies and possess a level of confidence sufficient to be able to determine whether complex construction practices comply with Code requirements. Certification as an Alberta Building Safety Codes officer Group II is preferred, but Group I minimum is required. The incumbent must also possess above average verbal and written communication skills combined with the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of circumstances, well-developed interpersonal and public relations skills and the ability to perform multiple tasks accurately and efficiently in a computerized environment. Applicants must have an Alberta Class 5 operator’s license. Applicants must be bondable.

The City of Brooks offers a competitive salary and benefit package with this position falling within the scope of the Collective Agreement between the City of Brooks and Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1032. Regular working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. The 2013 salary range for Group I is $30.36 to $33.41 and for Group II is $33.41 to $36.78.
