Based in Sydney, Hitachi Construction Machinery (Australia) (HCA) has positions all across the country. “We’ve doubled our size in the last five years, and we hope to do that in the next five to ten years,” explained Garth Quinn, Recruitment Manager. “We’re in a competitive market so we plan ahead strategically.” Competition for talent is high in these specialized industries, and the candidate audience can be selective.

Attracting qualified candidates for high-skilled jobs

In this competitive market, HCA wanted to develop the company’s employer brand and make its jobs stand out from the rest.

“We were getting a good number of candidates from our organic traffic on Indeed, but we wanted our jobs to be more prominently displayed to more candidates,” said Quinn. “We know that if we want the best talent, we need to use the best tools to reach them. Indeed is a new and necessary model for recruitment. That’s why we began sponsoring jobs with them.”

HCA sponsored jobs in engineering, field service and accounting positions, among other titles. While other recruitment sources provided traffic for its less-skilled jobs, HCA found that Indeed was the best source for its senior roles. “Indeed doesn’t just provide more traffic to our experienced roles, it gives us relevant candidates for those positions,” Quinn explained. “The candidate traffic from Indeed is twice as relevant as the traffic we get from SEEK.”

Because some of HCA’s roles are in remote locations, finding people in the right place with the right skills is another challenge. “On Indeed, people can find jobs they might not have found otherwise. That helps us overcome these locational challenges,” Quinn explained. “All of the sudden, a candidate in Mackay is able to consider a job in Perth because it appeared in their search results. It helps us build awareness for these jobs.”

Sourcing talent directly

In addition to Sponsored Jobs, HCA began using Indeed Resume to search for candidates with the specific skills it needed.

“Searching resumes on Indeed is simple and cost-effective, and it’s easy to contact people once you find a candidate you want,” Quinn said. “I was looking for a trainer for High Voltage Electricians. Finding the electricians is already like looking for a needle in a haystack, so finding someone who could train those electricians felt impossible. I searched on Indeed Resume, and immediately found eight people who had the right experience. I reached out to all of them, and heard back from each one within 24 hours. That was just 30 minutes of work for me.”

Empowering recruiters

Indeed’s pay-per-click model gives HCA control over its recruiting process, and the resources to expand it. “I can easily ramp up a campaign or pull back as needed. It’s more manageable than job boards that charge at a fixed rate,” Quinn said. “The team at Indeed knows the product really well, which means that I quickly get answers to all of my questions.”
