The System Administrator/Programmer is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure in MS Windows and Linux environment. The incumbent also develops database related applications and system related scripts. The System Administrator/Programmer is a technical expert who is also responsible for troubleshooting and reporting, and working independently and collaboratively with team members to understand and satisfy the Credit Union’s software programming needs.


Lead by example through commitment and adherence to YNCU’s Mission, Vision and Values and Leadership Principles
Analyze complex system specifications and develop and document designs that meet requirement standards
Design, write system management scripts and complete programming to specifications with a high level of quality
Develop database applications in VB and/or C#
Manage Windows Active Directory
Administer mail (MS Exchange) and web (IIS) servers
Ensure compatibility and interoperability of in-house systems
Apply a structured approach to isolate and resolve complex application-level problems or straightforward system-level problems
Implement and troubleshoot programming changes and modifications
Write technical instructions in the use of programs and/or program modifications
Manage system backups
Confer with users to gain understanding of required modifications of existing programs Participate as a technical consultant on YNCU projects
Assist in defining software development project plans, including scoping, scheduling and implementation
Install, configure and maintain server software (Windows, Linux)
Monitor and review system and network performance
Monitor system security
Provide 2nd tier support for advanced technical problems as escalated from the IT helpdesk
Provide coverage for Manager, Information Technology when necessary
Identify opportunities to supervisor that can achieve efficiencies and implement as approved
Provide excellent client service to internal and external parties
Be aware of enterprise risk management issues as they relate to department and bring forward strategic and risk issues for discussion, review and solutions to the Manager, IT
Maintain a thorough knowledge of policies and procedures as they pertain to the operations of the department
Abide by YNCU policies, procedures, standards, guidelines and practice
Work safely in accordance with YNCU’s Health & Safety Policy, procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act as amended from time to time
Other duties as assigned


Post secondary diploma, degree and/or certification in computer science, computer programming, software engineering or related discipline with minimum three (3) years of experience as a system administrator
Excellent knowledge of Windows 2008/2012 Active Directory, Policy Management, IIS, Terminal services
Good knowledge TCP/IP networking
Good knowledge of Visual Studio, .NET framework (VB, C#) and application development in SQL database environment (Oracle, MS SQL)
Good knowledge of scripting (bash, VBScript, PowerShell)
Good knowledge of web technologies (HTML, PHP, Perl)
Some knowledge of Linux
Hyper-V or VMWare, Crystal Report, Oracle and/or MS SQL administration, MS Exchange administration and/or WSUS experience an asset
Thorough knowledge and understanding of methods, standards and best practices in relation to software development
Hands-on troubleshooting experience
Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions
Ability to learn and support new systems and applications
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends in response to the needs of the systems being supported
Must have a valid Ontario driver's licence and reliable available vehicle
Must be bondable
