Westward has a part-time (3-4 days per week) opportunity for a Human Resources Manager, maternity leave contract. The HR Manager reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and provides HR support to less than 50 employees.

In this role, the HR Manager executes and implements the HR 2011-2012 strategic plan in the areas of employee relations and engagement, recruitment and selection, company culture, morale and motivation, training and development, performance management and compensation, payroll and benefits administration. The HR Manager is also responsible for Office Management, by providing guidance to the Office Administrator to ensure we maintain a comfortable work environment and to assist in managing staff events and communications.

Benefits, Compensation and Payroll

  • Manage attendance by tracking vacation, personal days and volunteer days
  • Administer benefits and liaise with Great West Life
  • Maintain compensation structure
  • Administer payroll forms, run payroll changes bi-weekly through Ceridian, review with Controller

Budget Management

  • Manage HR and office budget appropriately for programs, recruitment and events
  • Ensure approval sign off from Controller and COO
  • Negotiate supplier and contractor agreements


  • Issue employment and contract agreements
  • Maintain personnel folders and on-line employee files
  • Maintain and update the Policy Manual
  • Ensure HR policies and operational procedures are followed

Departures and Terminations

  • Manage the departure and termination process
  • Advise Managers of the appropriate communication
  • Conduct exit interviews and compile data for Executive reporting

Employee Engagement, Recognition & Retention

  • Conduct 1 Month new hire follow-up meetings
  • Organize the Annual Summer and Christmas Company Events
  • Administer the Employee Achievement Program
  • Foster positive employee relations and communication
  • Resolve and mediate grievances
  • Manage the Volunteer Experience Program

Office Management

  • Responsible for managing and implementing all office expansion projects
  • Ordering all office furniture
  • Providing direction and team development for Office Administrator
  • Ensuring Front Stage and Back Stage areas are maintained

Organizational Development

  • Maintain Professional Development program and source Training & Development courses
  • Conduct new hire Orientation and work with hiring managers to create Onboarding plan
  • Manage Culture Integration of 15 Motivating Values by facilitating Team Tools Workshop
  • Maintain the Organizational Chart
  • Maintain Job Descriptions

Performance Management

  • Manage the Annual and Mid-Year Performance Review process
  • Provide guidance to managers on progressive discipline
  • Administer Probation Reviews

Recruitment and Selection

  • Work with Department Managers to forecast recruitment plans
  • Advertise job postings, screen resumes and maintain candidate database
  • Provide Behavioural Interviewing guides to hiring managers
  • Conduct HR pre-screening and behavioural interviews
  • Conduct reference check s and administer KOLBE and Myers Briggs assessments
  • Liaise and maintain relationship with recruitment agencies



  • Bachelor Degree or Diploma in Business Management or Human Resources
  • CHRP an asset


  • 5+ years of progressive experience in human resources
  • 2+ years in office management


  • Excellent interpersonal skills and judgement
  • Maintains confidentiality and uses discretion appropriately
  • Superior written and verbal communication ability
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
