For over four years, WeirFoulds LLP has been involved with Toronto's Olympic bid for the 2008 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games and Cultural Festival (the "Bid) and is recognized as a Bronze Supporter of the Bid.
We were a founding donor to the Bid and, as the Bid became a reality, WeirFoulds LLP commenced the donation of legal services to the bid effort.
When the Bid corporation became organized, Bill Ross, a senior partner at WeirFoulds LLP, was appointed as a director. He has been active in committee work and has been a keen supporter of the Bid throughout.
WeirFoulds LLP has provided a substantial amount of legal services to the Bid over the last three and a half years. In particular, by the time the host city for the 2008 Games is chosen, John Wilkinson, a corporate and commercial partner at the firm, will have donated over a thousand hours of time to the bid effort.
All of the services rendered to the bid by WeirFoulds LLP have been on a pro bono basis. The donated services have ranged from assisting with the Bid corporation's corporate governance, being involved in the preparation of dozens and dozens of contracts into which the Bid has entered, and advising the Bid with respect to a variety of corporate and commercial issues which have arisen during the process. As well, John Wilkinson prepared and presented the Legal Theme of the Bid's Candidature File to the International Olympic Committee's Evaluation Commission which visited Toronto in March 2001 and helped to coordinate a team of Toronto lawyers who worked on the written material submitted to IOC as Toronto's "Bid Book". Finally, John Wilkinson will attend in Moscow at the time the IOC makes its decision regarding the host city on July 13, 2001.
WeirFoulds LLP has also coordinated and hosted meetings related to the Bid's Executive Committee, the Bid's interaction with the local advertising community and with respect to events and organizations related to but separate from the bid (including the Association International de la Presse Sportive ("AIPS") Conference in May, 2001 and the Foundation for Athletes and Sports Training ("FAST"), a charity devoted to the development of recreational and amateur athletics in Canada). John Wilkinson is a director on the board of FAST and Bill Ross introduced FAST to McClelland & Stewart, which will be publishing a book edited for FAST, the proceeds from which will go to FAST.
WeirFoulds LLP has supported the Olympic Bid, not only as an opportunity to bring the invaluable experience of the Olympics to Toronto, but also to further the realization of the Olympic ideals in Canada for the benefit of everyone. As well, WeirFoulds LLP recognizes that the Olympic Bid has and will be a catalyst for positive change in Toronto and Ontario.
Win or lose, the Bid itself will have a lasting impact on Toronto and has already created an important legacy for Canadian sports and culture of which WeirFoulds LLP is proud to have been a part. – less–ZoomInfo
