Sales Associate/Daily Supervisor (Former Employee) – Smithers, BC – 4 October 2013
While being responsible primarily for Thrift Store Sales I was able to also interact with a variety of customers from myriad walks of life. I learned a lot of patience and was exposed to situations that tested my inner strength. I have a lot of respect for my co-workers there and the strength it takes to work with the homeless, the needy and the mentally challenged. These people were both my favorite part of the job and also the most trying; Having to keep calm and in control when needing to respond to an emergency caused by a client used a lot of mental and physical energy but some of my volunteers could melt your heart by bringing you a flower and a handwritten note.
I was a PT Employee and didn't interact with management very often as I worked completely unsupervised during my time at The Salvation Army, except when we did the Kettles at Christmas.
Sundays off, Social Atmosphere, Variety of daily tasks
Assistant Store Manager (Former Employee) – Mississauga, ON – 25 May 2017
The Salvation Army fosters learning and personal growth. The company is a great place to work. The environment is competitive and fast paced, Many opportunities to grow and train. I would recommend this workplace to others.
Community Service Worker (Former Employee) – Whitby, ON – 24 May 2017
It is a good place to get community service done, the staff there were very friendly and they will accept any who come there. If you are a student in need of doing some community service hours to get your resume, this would be a great place to do so.
Kettle Host (Former Employee) – New Westminster, BC – 17 May 2017
I enjoyed it because the funds went to help others in need. Therefore it was task I knew went to people who needed it the most during Christmas. The company laid out the work needed done in a simple matter and was straight forward which I enjoyed.
Store Associate (Current Employee) – Montréal, QC – 17 May 2017
A lot of organizing, but other than that everyone is cool. One thing I dislike is the place itself. The place is so duty with too much dust. No major sweeping is ever made. Every day is dusty. We could get sick one day.
On-Call Cook (Current Employee) – Brantford, ON – 28 April 2017
Decent workplace, nothing too strenuous. Low pay but unionized so job security is pretty secure. Management is fair and understanding. Would recommend if you're looking for some part-time kitchen work and you can deal with earlier hours.
Secretarial Assistant/Receptionist (Former Employee) – Toronto, ON – 26 April 2017
Everyone wanted you to succeed at your job, staff was very friendly and helpful. I got a better understanding of how a non-profit company works and the extent to which people's donations/contributions can go a long way in assisting people in need.
Cashier/Merchandiser (Former Employee) – Calgary, AB – 24 April 2017
My time at Salvation Army was a positive experience for the most part, although the organization of management seemed unfair or disorganized at times. I have learned that thrift stores are all about compromise with customers and that I should always ask my supervisor/the manager if I am uncertain about what to do in a certain situation.
Collector (Former Employee) – Hamilton, ON – 13 April 2017
I did this food drive roughly about 3 years in a row to get those hours i needed for school. Once again, i worked with my close friends, we collected food, and one year we sorted the food out that came in.
Volunteer (Former Employee) – High River, AB – 7 April 2017
no matter what you did your job was recognized.During the most recent High River flood they took initiative to help all of those who lost their homes and their livelihood including myself. every staff member aways had a smile on their face.
Volunteer (Former Employee) – Markham, ON – 2 April 2017
The overall workplace of salvation army was mediocre. The boss at the time was easy going in the sense that he did not care about anything. He would treat the donations poorly and on occasion would say questionable things about people.
