The Prince George Hotel is the only fully independent Hotel in Nova Scotia to earn a four diamond rating from the Canadian Automobile Association. General Manager, Nicholas Carson says, "Our four diamond rating is an extremely important designation that enables visitors to establish the quality of this Hotel before they arrive; it is a widely recognized hallmark of quality and therefore essential to an independent Hotel that is not affiliated with a nationally branded chain."
One of the most basic essentials of any four diamond Hotel is impeccable cleanliness and high standards of upkeep. To create a little excitement and an incentive for the Housekeeping team, Lynn Davis, Rooms Manager, and her team devised a competition that helps the Housekeeping team to provide an exceptionally clean and well maintained product.
The program is called Diamonds Are 4-Ever. Each month, Lynn and the department supervisors hide 50 "diamonds" in remote and less accessible places around the Hotel. During the course of the month, Room Attendants discover these gems hidden strategically in the more hard to clean and out of the way areas of the hotel's 203 guestrooms. At the end of each month, the Room Attendant who has found the most "diamonds" is rewarded with a gift certificate for groceries or the movies or a dinner for two. Explained Lynn Davis, "Making sure that the tops of mirrors and pictures are dusted, under the beds vacuumed and window frames wiped clean is always a challenge, but with this program we found a lot more detailed attention was paid to those areas that previously might more easily have been overlooked."
A few minor kinks had to be worked out in the first months of the program. Sometimes not all the gems were found, and sometimes a guest would find a "diamond" and pocket it. Lynn and her team had to carefully record where diamonds were planted, where they were found and by whom, noting those that just disappeared.
To create a high level of excitement for the program's first year, the Hotel invested in a genuine 14 carat gold ring, crowned with a four diamond claw setting which was awarded to the team member who collected the most "diamonds" throughout the first year of the program. At a presentation on May 2, 2008, Nicholas Carson presented this beautiful prize to Debbie Harvey, in recognition of her "great diamond mining" achievement. Debbie, who has served The Prince George Hotel for 18 years, was quoted as saying "once I saw the ring I became really focused on searching for the diamonds as I cleaned the rooms - I got more excited with each one I found, and couldn't wait to get home each day to tell my family how many I had discovered".
Every visitor to the Prince George Hotel finds their guestroom in "like new condition", and some who inspect more closely may even come across a diamond or two! – less – More from ZoomInfo »
