Otesha’s vision is to see sustainable consumption and lifestyle choices enter the mainstream of Canadian culture. As a national youth-led charitable organization, we use experiential learning, theatre and bicycle tours to engage and empower Canadians of all ages to take action for a more equitable and sustainable world.
To date, The Otesha Project has connected with over 150,000 Canadians through creative and energizing performances, workshops, and keynote presentations, and trained over 500 sustainability advocates through Otesha’s unique cycling and performing tour program.
The Otesha Project seeks an Executive Director to lead a small team of staff and volunteers to deliver on Otesha’s strategic direction of establishing and solidifying a sustainable operations plan for the organization. Over the course of the next year Otesha is aiming to both increase our revenue and heighten our impact. This position is a rare opportunity to become part of a small team of dedicated and passionate individuals working to create positive societal change.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will be responsible for the direct coordination of three streams of work: fundraising, organizational management and strategic partnerships.
Fundraising and revenue generation activities include ensuring funder relations are maintained and expanded and that Otesha’s donor base is cultivated and stewarded to continue or increase their giving. Supporting staff to ensure integration of revenue generation into organizational programs and activities will also be a key deliverable.
Organizational management includes overseeing and delivering on the operational plan of Otesha’s strategic direction. This includes day-to-day operational procedures such as hiring, recruiting and training staff, as well as generally managing the organization’s human resources needs. It also involves the management of legal and contractual relationships such as the CRA. Financial processing, budgeting, accounting and payroll are also duties housed within the role of Executive Director.
Strategic partnerships work will aim to increase the profile and capacity of the Otesha Project by cultivating relationships with other organizations, individuals and the private sector. A significant piece of this work involves speaking publicly on behalf of the organization.
Overall, the organization is seeking a dynamic and delivery oriented leader who believes in the impact young people can have on the future of our planet. The successful candidate will bring with them previous experience managing operations and working in small teams with tight resources. She/he will have strong financial literacy and the ability to manage teams in consensus - based environments. Ideally, they will also have significant partnership building experience.
Ideal Attributes, Abilities and Skills:
- 2-5 years experience in the for-profit or not-for-profit sector
- Experience with building an individual donor base and/or in non-profit fundraising
- Knowledge of sustainability and social justice issues
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment
- Experience co-ordinating and supervising others
- Self-motivated, demonstrated ability to take initiative
- Strong attention to detail and high productivity
- Experience developing budgets and preparing financial statements
- Familiarity with accounting software (Quickbooks) an asset
