The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to: Build community, grow hope and support change. Following the example of Jesus, our mission is to deliver basic services, housing and employment programs to those in need and to partner with the community to address the root causes of poverty.
As a member of the Basic Services Team, the Meal Facilitator works in the evening meal program, facilitating the preparation and serving of food for 200- 350 people each evening. The facilitator works under the guidance of the Food Services Coordinator and is ultimately accountable to the Director of Basic Services.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilitate and direct meal groups in the preparation, service and clean-up of evening meals.
Communicate the story of The Mustard Seed’s ministry and community to volunteers by providing regular briefings, debriefing and tours.
Supervise the safe and respectful meal service to The Mustard Seed community
Communicate and cooperate with the Street Level team during meal service to ensure a safe and dignified experience for the community and volunteers
Ensure kitchen cleanliness at the end of each meal is to Alberta Health Standards.
Ensure all food is prepared and handled in a Food Safe manner
Provide feedback to the Food Services Coordinator to improve the Evening Meal Program
Assent and adhere to The Mustard Seed’s policy and procedure manuals
Ensure daily maintenance of kitchen related log books and records.
Attend and participate in all relevant staff meetings and trainings.
Attend regular support meetings with Food Services Coordinator.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills:
Strong communication and leadership skills.
Ability to be flexible to a wide variety of groups and personality types
Ability to adapt to changing situations
Food Safety Certification and First Aid Training
Strong organizational skills.
Experience working in a commercial kitchen is considered a definite asset.
Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset.
Experience working within the culture of the inner city is considered an asset.
Assent to The Mustard Seed's Statement of Faith.
Willing to submit to and ability to pass an Enhanced Security clearance by Correctional Services Canada and an Employment Security Check.
Fast paced indoor working environment.
Moderate physical effort, includes: regular heavy lifting (50 lbs or more) when handling food, being on your feet for extended periods of time (4 hours at a time) during meal prep and meal service.
Moderate mental effort, includes ability to solve problems pertaining to the meal service under time pressure, receiving monetary donations for the meal program, connecting with volunteer groups.
Hours of Work:
Part-time, permanent, hourly, $16.90/hr, regular evening and weekend shifts
