Hours of Work: Vary and are dependent on program registration. Programs are offered morning, afternoon and evening, on weekdays and weekends.

The Sailing Instructor will be responsible for instruction in various levels of the CanSail curriculum of the Sail Canada program including the development of skill base and knowledge in the activity area. Primary duties include:

  • Teach specific skills to participants through progressive development and sharing of knowledge base.
  • Adherence to standard curriculum and completion of participant progress cards.
  • Plan lessons provided by the CanSail program and foster modifications as required.
  • Maintain program records and assist with program evaluation.
  • Provide safety expertise and ensure safety and well being of participants.
  • Preparation and maintenance of equipment, supplies, and program space.
  • Maintain high degree of customer service.

Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years of age and have a current Standard First Aid level C and CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certification. All applicants must possess a minimum of one current Sail Canada Instructor Level (Certified CanSail 1/2 Coach, CanSail 3/4 Coach, CanSail 5/6 Coach, Chutes and Wires Coach, Wet Feet Coach). To qualify as a Level 1, 2, 3, or Head Sailing Instructor candidates must also possess the Boat Rescue, National Lifeguard Service, Bronze Medallion, or Bronze Cross award, and the Sail Canada Fundamental course or equivalent and all its prerequisites. In addition, candidates must also possess a valid Canadian Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operators Card. Level 2 and 3 Sailing Instructors must have a minimum of one and two years of sailing instruction experience, respectively. To qualify as a Head Sailing Instructor candidates must possess the Sail Canada Silver Sail certificate and Seal, or Sail Canada Learn to Race Certificate and Seal or equivalent and its prerequisites. In addition, 300 hours of instructing as an instructor is a must. All certifications must be current as of the first day of work and any lapsed qualifications throughout the season must be re-certified prior to expiration. Preference will be given to those who have previous Sailing Instructor experience.

Successful performance in this position requires demonstrated abilities in the following areas: sound judgment in safety standards; ability to adapt to changing needs of the program and/or participants; demonstrated skill, knowledge, and proficiency in the area of instruction; excellent oral communication skills; demonstrated initiative, planning, and organizational skills; ability to work in a team environment.
