Great Products, but employee values and safety comprimised
Sales Associate, 3rd Key holder (Former Employee), Canada – November 20, 2012
Pros: great products, good product values
Cons: employee safety compromised
When I started working at Body Shop I loved it. I really did. The Products are amazing, you have a great discount and you believe in the company's values. I felt proud to work for a place that was against animal testing and supports fair trade. It's a great feeling to work for a company with such great world values and concerns for the environment.

Unfortunately, – more... these values did not carry over to their employees.

There was an extreme amount of pressure to sell, and employees were 'graded' based on their performance. However, your stats were based upon your transactions that you processed at the cash, so if you were at lease-line or helping a customer and another employee rang up the purchase you helped a client with, they recieved the credit.

Also, scheduling was unreliable. One several occasions, I would come in to work only to find out that my hours had been cut for that very day, or that I was starting 2 hours later than I was supposed to. They would make changes without notifying us less than 24 hours before our shifts were supposed to being.

These things aside, the issue that made me leave my job was the evening shifts. Often, we would be expected to work 5 to 6 hours alone at night till closing. Our store had no alarms, no surveillance, no security. We were entirely a female staff. Being alone from 3 to 9:30, having to close and count the cashes, as well as drop off the deposit alone was incredibly irresponsible of the company. This really compromised my safety, as well as the safety of other women who were working alone.

I really liked working there, It was sad to leave. What's even sadder is that a company that claims to carry such good values about protecting the environment and animals can't carry these values over to their own employees. – less

A business with values, but sales goals more important then anything
Assistant Manager (Former Employee), West Hartford, CT – November 13, 2012
Pros: great discount, great world values
Cons: no breaks sometimes, no time off
The company has a lot of values when fair trade and animal rights are concerns. There isn't much concern for employee happiness or work/life balance, its a retail job so you have to be there all the time. There aren't many benefits and the time off it laughable. The hardest part of the job as a manager is being alone in the store for so long, you aren't – more... allowed to leave the store and if its busy, you can't take a break till another manager shows up. – less

Very demanding
Assistant Manager (Former Employee), Los Angeles, CA – October 22, 2012
Pros: long lunch, playing music
Cons: no healthcare, no room to grow
There was no organization and no real management. Long hours and no help. Typical day would open the store and clean up the entire store. Help out any customer with any question. I learned to work well alone and how to get a lot of work done by multitasking and managing a store where I was the only employee for a whole shift. The hardest thing was working – more... 15hrs shift for 2 weeks. I did like helping customers find which scent suited them the best. – less

produced good work
paint sprayer and repairer (Former Employee), Chesterfield – October 19, 2012
Pros: easy working, friendly environment
Cons: long hours
We would begin by having just a general chat for 30 mins at 8 o clock and then begin to start work by prepping a vehicle an getting it ready for paint within a time schedule. I had 3 co-workers helping or getting another vehicle ready. management was good as stock was brought in each week and they would even help with getting some vehicles ready. The – more... hardest part was having time to maintain the inside of the building as the work we produced had to be done on a strict timescale.I enjoyed the banter we had whilst on our breaks. – less

Enjoyable and Productive workplace
Customer Consultant (Current Employee), Harlow, Essex – September 20, 2012
Pros: good discount, friendly staff, close team, general nice place to work
Cons: short shifts, lots of lifting, remote stockroom
A typical days work includes arriving 10 minutes before shift, making sure your uniform is clean, and you are of tidy appearance. Then onto the shop floor where you serve customers making sure everyone is greeted and seen to and giving a full customer service. I have learnt how to talk confidently to customers and how to multi task and work as part – more... of a team.My manager always tries to help us out as best as she can and is a very good manager. My colleagues are all helpful and we are a very close knit team. We all work as a team to get all jobs done. The hardest part of the job is re-stocking the shelves as the stock room is remote and there is two flights of stairs to go up and down. The most enjoyable part of the job is helping the customers find what they need/want and knowing that they are happy when the leave the store. – less

management experience
Sales Manager (Former Employee), Chicago, IL – September 11, 2012
Pros: they gave us free products every year.
I like this job too. Especially because of my manager. She is very hard-working person. She was great motivation for me. I started there as a part time sales person. After I was promoted to the full time and after for assistant manager. They wanted to promote me to a manager but I was at school that time so I was not able to take that much responsibilities.
Our – more... priority were sales. We were selling a lot. It was "million store", so we had lots of customers. We did demonstrations, recommendations; I was make up artist as well.
At the beginning of the day and the end I did opening accounting and closing. I took money to the bank as well.
I did order of products for the store.
A few times a month we were changing all decorations, so I did visual as well.
I was as a manager for a month when my manager had her baby.
I hired people. Sometimes I fired as well, unfortunately it happen.
But this job gave me very nice experience, especial in customer service and communication. – less

Great fun, very educational
Assistant Manager (Former Employee), London – September 11, 2012
Pros: free products
Cons: much expected for very little
You can learn a great deal about products, community fair trade and general informative things about your body and skin type. The management expect a lot from their staff, customer service and product knowledge need to be 100% especially if you are in one of the newer stores. My only concern with The Body Shop is that there is a lack of opportunities – more... for graduates who wish to proceed further within the company, they tend to overlook those who have worked well or for a long time when considering promotions. The Body Shop tend to hire via regional managers who spend very little time with the workers on the shop floor and within the store. – less

Customer Service, Retail
Sales Rep (Former Employee), Pearland, TX – August 20, 2012
Good Environment to promote product benefits and the benefit of purchase that were contributed to other countries and maintained a very natural product in many different lines to benefit your skin, mind and body.
Management were not friendly and made inappropriate request during interview.
Co-workers were very friendly and really informative with customers.
Locations – more... are typically in malls so good for a more secure environment. – less

Loved the Company before it bacame Loreal
Manager of "Americas Best Loved Candles" shop (Former Employee), Hebron, KY – August 8, 2012
Pros: samples of make-up
Cons: sometimes couldn't go to the bathroom
I was the manager of a retail Airport store. It was very challenging but rewarding as well. I loved working there except for the DM. She was very high strung and demanding. But as long as she was not around, everyone on our team got along well. My asst. mgr. and I were a well oiled machine and we worked often together to make sure that the store hit – more... it's goals and looked exceptional. Also liked what they stood for; maintaining standards of living for women in Africa etc. – less
