Canadian Mental Health Association-Edmonton Region (CMHA-ER) is a non-profit organization that has been making mental health matter in the Edmonton community for over 55 years. CMHA-ER promotes mental health and recovery and provides direct service to youth and adults living with severe and persistent mental illness. CMHA-ER offers training in suicide prevention and intervention, mental health first aid and peer leadership; advocacy; mental health recovery programs; family support groups and affordable housing. The Mental Health Educator provides information and presentations on mental health, mental illness and suicide prevention to the community at large. Target groups are educational settings, non-profit organizations, public and private sector organizations. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Represents CMHA -ER in a variety of community settings and presents a broad range of information in an engaging, comprehensive, knowledgeable and readily accessible manner
  • Provides information on mental health, mental illness and suicide prevention to a wide variety of audiences
  • Works in partnership with team members to plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate all aspects of education services activities
  • Develops and maintains a resource library for Education Services
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of program materials, supplies and resources
  • Develops and maintains relations with public educators representing allied service providers
  • Plans and implements health promotion week activities; including Mental Health Week, Suicide Awareness Week and Mental Illness Awareness Week
  • Oversees suicide intervention and mental health first aid training
  • Keeps up to date on current issues related to mental health, mental illness and suicide prevention
  • Prepares monthly program reports including qualitative and quantitative information
  • Works cohesively with fellow employees to maintain a professional and enjoyable work environment

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field
  • In-depth understanding of mental health, mental illness and suicide prevention
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in public speaking and group facilitation, with a preference for experience presenting on mental health, mental illness and suicide prevention
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and presenting high-quality and professional educational material (classroom presentations, workshops, seminars, public forums,speaking engagements, etc.) to a wide variety of audiences and proficiency with various forms of presentation media
  • Strong leadership skills and event planning skills
  • Flexibility and ability to meet multiple competing demands; well-developed organizational, problem solving, decision making and time management skills
  • Strong work ethic and “ownership” of work
  • Ability to establish credibility with students and teachers, build relationships with teachers and the school community
  • Ability to use technology efficiently, effectively and troubleshoot technology issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent public relations skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning with respect to best practices in mental health promotion and facilitation
  • Self-motivated and self- directed
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Ability to articulate and demonstrate a commitment to the values, objectives and vision of the agency
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Has ready access to a reliable vehicle
  • Is able to lift and move up to 35 pounds

Remuneration: $42,271 to $55,628 per annum. CMHA-ER offers a competitive compensation package which includes extended health benefits and pension plan along with a dynamic working environment and professional development opportunities.

Hours of Work: 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. Flexible hours are with a fair amount of flexibility required for scheduled evening and weekend presentations.
