High Risk Youth Unit Program
Kahkiyaw is being delivered in partnership by Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society and Boyle Street Community Services, two community organizations with a long and successful history of serving Aboriginal people in Edmonton. Working closely with CFSA Region 6 and using the Outcome Based Service Delivery model, the program will provide a continuum of services to improve the outcomes for Aboriginal children and families in our city.
This position reports to the Youth Services Manager at the Boyle Street Community Services and will work in collaboration with Kahkiyaw’s Family Wellness supervisors & Child and Family Services Region 6 caseworkers. The Family Wellness Youth Specialist will assist Youth in stabilizing their lives and increasing opportunities for success. The Family Wellness Youth Specialist works from a harm reduction approach, a relationship based practice and a strength based philosophy. The Family Wellness Youth Specialist is responsible for case management along with our CFSA Region 6 partner and will work within the parameters of the High Risk Youth Initiative in helping participants.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Coordinate with CFSA workers and participants on intervention strategies to help youth pursue safer and healthier lives.
  • Establish relationship-based practice with participants and to build rapport with caseworkers, family members & other supports.
  • Work from a strengths perspective with all participants.
  • Assist in creating a safe, secure and supportive environment which respects the participant and his/her right to participate in all decisions affecting them.
  • Provide crisis intervention and safety planning.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to community services.
  • Advocate to ensure basic needs of participant are being met.
  • Respect and meet the various cultural needs of the participant.
  • Provide guidance and support and make referrals for participant on issues related to health, family, addictions, justice, education, employment, recreation and housing.
  • Establish working relationships with Boyle Street Community Services staff, the High Risk Youth Initiative and various NCCYF staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Diploma or Degree in Human Services; minimum of two years of relevant related experience. Must have knowledge and experience working with high risk youth and families.
Skills, Abilities and Attitudes:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the High Risk Youth Initiative philosophy, including harm reduction and relationship based practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of addictions, gangs, sexual exploitation, homelessness, poverty, use and neglect.
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal Culture.
  • Exhibits and exceptional ability in connecting with youth and understands barriers encountered by youth.
  • Knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act and the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act.
  • Demonstrate effective time management skills, strong professional boundaries and quick and efficient problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer and report writing skills, including Microsoft Office and experience working with a data base e.g. (ETO- Efforts Towards Outcomes).
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Extensive travel and transportation of clients is a necessity and have a reliable vehicle.
  • Hours will be vary each week; will be after hours responsibilities.

Experience
1) Knowledge of Aboriginal peoples, new immigrants, ethno-cultural groups and vulnerable populations.
2) Level 1 First-Aid, Applied Suicide Intervention and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certified.
3) Criminal Record check and Child and Youth Information Systems check are required.
4) Driver’s Abstract

RATE OF PAY
Starting salary is $39,611 - $46,602 per month, travel compensated as well. After 3 months’ probation, salary will increase to $4,550.00 per month plus travel.
