STAFF SCIENTIST -FULL-TIME POSITION

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Staff Scientist is responsible to plan, develop, deliver and evaluate a wide variety of informal STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) learning opportunities (e.g. interpretive programs, presentations, courses, camps, interactive exhibits, shows, demonstrations) to increase science literacy (public awareness and understanding of STEM) and that support the achievement of TELUS World of Science – Edmonton (TWoSE) annual operating and long-term strategic goals and objectives, including attendance and revenue targets.

The Staff Scientist is responsible to ensure the accuracy, objectivity, relevancy and currency of all STEM information presented by/through TWoSE. The Staff Scientist is responsible to investigate, comprehend, translate and communicate STEM topics, subject matter and issues that are of interest and/or relevant to TWoSE diverse general public audiences in a manner that engages these audiences and increases their appreciation for and understanding of the topic(s).

The Staff Scientist will be a key scientific resource to the entire organization and will support TWoSE school programming team as required. The Staff Scientist may act as a scientific representative of TWOSE externally and will perform a variety of duties that are integral to meeting the goals and objectives of the organization.

The Staff Scientist reports directly to the Science Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Translation of scientific content for a diverse public audience to achieve the annual and long term strategies and goals of the organization. This includes but is not limited to:

o Investigate emerging trends, innovations, science news and external resources for potential learning opportunities.
o Provide plans, budget, conceptual design, development, staffing requirements and implementation of new learning opportunities.
o Provide scientific expertise to ensure and validate scientific accuracy in all programming areas (school & public).
o Evaluate and respond to visitor experience.

  • Responsible for the successful delivery of informal learning opportunities. This includes but is not limited to:

o Develop area specific operating procedures and practices and monitor maintenance/repairs of equipment and science tools for safe and effective delivery of programs.
o Ensure program staff are fully knowledgeable and competent to deliver TWOSE programs to organizational and safety standards. Includes scheduling, supervising, training, evaluating and coordinating paid and volunteer staff.
o Identify and utilize internal and external resources to meet goal and objectives of the organization.
o Manage and control expenditures relating to duties and responsibilities.

  • Represent TWOSE as a key scientific resource externally as well as within the organization.

o Represent TWOSE at professional functions, meetings, science fairs and media events.
o Serve as scientific resource to staff, public and media by providing science translation to a diverse public audience.

  • Other duties as may be required.

SALARY AND HOURS OF WORK:

$57,744.38 - $68,582.20 based on 2010 Collective Agreement

75 hours bi-weekly
