Plagues of locusts, weevils, or any other kind of crop-destroying bugs were no match for Syngenta Crop Protection. The subsidiary of Syngenta AG manufactured scores of products (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and seed treatments) used by farmers and pest control operators to control insects, crop diseases, and weeds. The company operated manufacturing – more... and development facilities in the US. Its agrochemical products were used to protect all manner of crops from corn and soybeans to cotton and peanuts. Syngenta's brands included Garst, Golden Harvest, Hilleshög, and Rogers. Syngenta Crop Protection operations were combined with Syngenta Seeds in 2011 to form Syngenta North America.

The parent company recognizes that going forward its growing biotechnology business may cannibalize its crop protection business as genetically modified seeds will become resistant to many of the diseases that formerly required the use of one or more of Syngenta Crop Protection's herbicide, insecticide, and fungicide products.

In addition to its US biotechnical research, the company opened Syngenta Biotechnology China, or SBC, in Beijing in 2008. It was the first foreign-funded agricultural biotech research institution in China. SBC specializes in early research of agronomic traits for key crops such as corn and soybean and focuses on yield improvement, water optimization, disease control, and biomass conversion for biofuels.
