Engineer (Current Employee) – Remote – 23 December 2017
Synacor is a fantastic place to work, the culture of being able to work remotely or to attend the office with casual clothes gives it a touch of flexibility that is appreciated in these modern times. My direct managers have always been available to work hard but also to help me through the career development process, a good place to work.
Culturing workplace which is open to helping you learn
Engineer (Former Employee) – Buffalo, NY – 7 December 2014
Synacor was a great place to work as a beginning programmer. Having little real world experience, this company was a great way to expose me to large scale projects. Management likes to help you accomplish career goals and is willing to find out what makes you tick as a programmer.
At Synacor, you gain experience in a variety of languages if you choose to learn them and management is happy to throw new work at you and see how you do. Teams are very closely knit and are extremely helpful.
Only downside is that the company frequently performs layoffs and struggles to define what it is they want to do for customers. They do not have a clear direction, and this leads to poor profits which leads to good programmers getting laid off without any say from team managers.
Good way to learn new languages, benefits, nice culture and work environment
Frequently spending late nights at the office, little recognition for efforts outside of your team, frequent lay offs, poor upper management

This is a company that really cares about its workers. Work days can be odd. Some positions require weekend shifts or late nights. The pay is OK, but not the best you will find. However, Synacor goes up and beyond in doing many things, such as fully covered health insurance, very affordable dental and vision plans, 25 cent vending machines, free fruit, coffee and tea for all of its employees, many company activities and casual dress code. The management is pretty in touch with the day-to-day operations for its employees. You learn a lot about how web portals operate. Most of the co-workers are young, ambitious, creative and open-minded people.
