Hotel & Residence - Structured and productive
Residential Concierge at W Hoboken (Current Employee), Hoboken, NJ – February 7, 2013
Pros: free lunch, great staff to work with
Cons: turnover within the staff
A typical work day I check emails and voice messages, answer emails to questions residences have regarding travel plans, refinancing, engineering and deliveries. I also walk resident floors to make sure they are cleaned properly. I work with the Concierge Team regarding dry cleaning and packages plus outgoing packages. Overseeing all areas of the hotel – more... that may have contact with residences in regards too room service, housekeeping or engineering requests. The most enjoyable part of the job is to see the residences on a daily basis and have a genuine relationship with them but keeping it professional. The hardest part of the job, is working in a hotel setting having so many avenues for residences to go thru and having different outcomes. The past several years I have learned to be a better manager. – less

Enjoyable
Bartender (Current Employee), Dubai, UAE – January 23, 2013
Pros: we have a free accomodation, transportation and food
Cons: even if you dont like to go, the management still forcing you to go to the other outlet to help them even if not much busy.
I am learning a lot because of my own trainings, its a bit hard in my outlet because were only two bartenders in our bar outlet. As much as possible me and my bar maid, we only enjoy our daily bar operations.

Glad to have put an unpleasant experience behind me...
Global Brand Design (Former Employee), New York, NY – January 18, 2013
Pros: competitive salary
Cons: see full review
Pros:
- Decent pay
- Nice hotel perks
- Pleasant office lighting
- Comfy chair

Cons:
- Cloistered/siloed work environment with very little collaboration
- Strained and sometimes contentious relationships between teams
- Lack of clear vision/direction; brand-mandated projects seem to materialize out of thin air with little basis in overall brand strategy, – more... which amounted to a waste of money on already limited budgets
- One-way workflow from brand to design that discouraged real innovation or new ideas; more than once I was instructed to "give [brand] what they asked for."
- Huge corporate environment in love with its own corporate procedures
- Very poor on-boarding process for new hires
- Politically charged work atmosphere that frowns upon open communication
- Poor relationships among senior leadership; low intensity conflicts between them definitely carried down to the team levels
- Some (not all) senior-level colleagues succeed by playing the blame game; more than once I saw coworkers get thrown under the bus for their mistakes – less

does not promote from within
housekeeping (Current Employee), pittsburgh pa – January 8, 2013
Pros: healthcare & free meals
Cons: if your not liked by co-workers your chances for promotion is limited
Work hours are hard to achieve and o/c status could last several years. Healthcare not free so when laid off or on call you are responsible for payment of your healthcare.

If you are union then you should be covered needless to say, you should talk to your HR manager and see about your insurance coverage. I am sure if this is a fair company, they will help you. Good Luck!

Great summer internship experience!
Rotational Intern (Former Employee), Hoboken, NJ – January 7, 2013
Pros: free lunch, great staff, held accountable
I really enjoyed interning with Starwood Hotels for two consecutive summers. They really do want to see you grow and are willing to give you as much responsibility as you're willing to take. Everyone is generally friendly and make an effort to get to know you.

I've gained a deeper understanding about hotel operations because of these internships. I – more... have also worked on my leadership skills in union and non-union environments. – less

fun workplace, recognition of employees, flexible schedules
Vacation Planning Counselor (Former Employee), Orlando, FL – December 29, 2012
Pros: great benefits, flexible scheduling, free trips
Cons: points based attendance, gossiping, inconsistency of rules
Starwood Vacation Ownership is a very laid back, easy going, very flexible scheduling, fast and slow paced work environment.
I really enjoyed working there. The benefits are fantastic! They give out a lot of free trips, discounts and other great stuff.
Most managers are great and very involved.

Cons
At times, I felt as though the company was not being – more... consistent and fair with their rules and dress code policy for employees, and not giving owners accurate info about the company products
There are a lot of gossiping among the employees and supervisors
I felt as though for the position i was hired for was more than what i was expecting and was not listed under the job description of a vacation planning counselors – less

Dead end job
Guest services agent (Former Employee), Fort Lauderdale, Fl – December 26, 2012
Cons: healthcare, lack of promotion opportunity, working holidays, hr, mgmt, corporate
I worked at the W for three years and it was a mess. Mgmt and hr are terrible. No method to the madness. No promoting from within. Poor pay and do not expect more than a .23/hr raise per YEAR ... If you get an excellent review. Main perk is hotel discounts BUT be careful, they will cxl your res in a heartbeat and without notice if they feel they can – more... sell your room for more than your rate. Health care is scary expensive and has a min 3500.00 deductible. Starwood is where educated college grads go to committ career suicide. Don't waste your time. Also, working all holidays a must. – less
