We currently run licensed programs at the following centres:
St. Gabriel Child Care Centre
St. Gregory Kindergarten and Before and After School Program
St. Peter’s Before and After School Program
Newest St. Clements Before and After School Program

Position: Early Childhood Educator
Reports to: Site Supervisor/Executive Director/ECE Manager

Position Summary
Responsible for planning and providing (in co-operation with a teaching partner) a balanced developmentally appropriate program which pertains to the emotional, physical, social, and intellectual development of children ages 18 months to 12 years of age.

1. Membership in the College of ECE
2. Certification with the College of Early Childhood, and in good standing.
3. Graduate of an ECE program or equivalent at a recognized institution.
4. A clear Vulnerable Screening Police Check with no negative contact. This is to be resubmitted every two years at the child cares expense at the discretion of the director

The ECE will:
1. Be a friendly, empathetic and mature individual who is able to relate well to children, parents and staff
2. Be willing to work as a co-operative and enthusiastic team member who shares ideas, view etc. with others openly
3. Have a good command of written and oral English and a proven ability to communicate in a pleasant, courteous and tactful manner
4. Have the incentive to upgrade oneself in the field of Early Childhood Education
5. Have experience or placement working with families in a multicultural setting
6. Have the ability to work independently and make decisions regarding crisis and difficult situations based on knowledge of the Day Nurseries Act and the policies and procedures of the child care centre
7. It would be favourable if the employee possessed a valid driver's licence.

Professional Development and Professionalism
ECE will:
1.Participate in professional development through continuing education courses, workshops and local conferences, discussions; reading etc… the Centre is committed to supporting these opportunities through the stated compensation policies
2. Be prompt, well groomed and wear appropriate attire for the profession
3. Maintain confidentiality; verbally and electronically

the ECE will:
1. Meet with team partners in order to develop a monthly and weekly teaching plan, encompassing all areas of development
2. Supervise the children in daily activities and guide them in the physical, social cognitive and emotional development in accordance with the philosophy of the centre
3. Plan and implement a programming geared to the individual child’s requirements with concerns for his/her interests, special needs and talents, and development level
4. Effectively guide and supervise a group of children while attending to each individual’s specific needs
5. Observe, record, and evaluate a child’s development objectively, on an ongoing basis, using assessment/evaluation tools which are approved by the supervisor. To perform formal development reviews in January and June of each year and to have parental interviews at these times
6. Utilize consistent and effective discipline techniques that follow the Behaviour Management philosophy of the centre (i.e. provide alternatives and re-direction)
7. Exhibit awareness of various cultures, backgrounds, and lifestyles and accept these differences in children and families. Provide experiences and materials that actively promote anti-racist and non-sexist integration and attitudes
8. Perform any extra duties involved specific to each individual child (i.e. Individual program plans/goals. Flexible dependent on the needs of the program at the discretion of the Director
9. Actively participate and plan special programs such as March Break and Summer Camp
10. Ensure that the environment is decorated with bulletin boards, pictures and children’s artwork that is stimulating, attractive and age appropriate on a consistent basis
11. Maintain a Parent Board with current information, planners, menus, and policies

ECE will:
1. Wash & disinfect toys, tables, sinks, toilets after each use as required
2. Stack chairs on tables at the end of the day
3. Sweep/wash floors as needed during the day
4. Remove garbage to outdoor bin as needed
5. Perform water flushing as required

Parental Interactions:
the ECE will:
1. Maintain a positive, supportive, and informative relationship with the parents. Solicit parent feedback regarding their child on a daily basis, and discusses the programs daily events with parents (give three examples)
2. Listen to parental concerns and respond appropriately
3. Act as a resource to parents regarding issues such as child development; age appropriateness

Teaching Styles & Practices
the ECE will:
1. Listen to the children and respond to their needs
2. Be flexible with the schedule and program to incorporate the needs of the children
3. Be effective in encouraging independence
4. Be flexible with transition techniques and open to trying new ideas
5. Have the ability to care, instruct and guide children through routines necessary during the day, being constantly aware of security safety
6. Accept cultural, racial, and individual differences

Behaviour Management
the ECE will:
1. Observe and assess the progress and behaviour of the children to ensure that the program meets individual needs
2. Be aware of possible support services for families and be able to recommend that a child be referred to an outside agency when the need is apparent
3. Be positive in all dealings with children and focuses comments on behaviour management
4. Anticipate problem solving situations and move to avoid injury, power struggles, or conflicts
5. Handle discipline promptly and in accordance with the stated police on Behaviour Management
6. Use reinforcement to encourage compliance and redirection and logical consequences before time-out.
7. Be responsible for children during fire drills or emergency evacuation
Be empathetic towards individual realities of the child and has the ability to develop a trusting, caring relationship with all children

Team Building & Problem Solving
the ECE will:
1. Participate in team planning to problem solve
2. Be supportive of other staff
3. Work actively with team members to solve problems and accomplish work objectives
4. Readily deal with conflict and work towards finding constructive solutions
5. Ask for support when needed
6. Attend and actively participate in monthly staff meetings.
7. Be able to identify problems and solve them

Hours of Work

  • Starting ASAP
  • Monday – Friday, Split Shift
  • Shifts will vary between 7:00 am - 6:00 pm
