Curtain Wall Designer (Drafting Technologist)
Sota Glazing Inc. (“Sota Glazing”) seeks Senior Designer/Drafting Technologists who will be responsible for developing and preparing engineering designs and drawings from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets and other data provided by architects and engineers.
The proposed position will be located at the company’s business office in Brampton, Ontario and/or its satellite drafting offices in Winnipeg or Edmonton.
The Senior Designer (Drafting Technologist) will be required to perform the following duties:
a) Designing drawing and plans using computer-aided design and drafting software;
b) Working from rough sketches and specifications created by engineers and architects;
c) Specifying the dimensions, materials, and procedures for new curtain wall systems;
d) Preparing multiple versions of curtain wall designs for review by engineers and architects;
e) Completing documentation packages and produce drawing sets;
f) Checking and verifying design drawings to ensure that they conform to specifications and design data;
g) Writing all required technical reports relating to the curtain wall system design;
h) Attendance at meetings and discussions with owners, architects and customers to provide technical design support related to specifications and details specific to the project; and
i) Supervising and training less senior curtain wall designers and draftpersons (drafting technologists)
Due to the specialized nature of the proposed position, the Senior Designer (Drafting Technologist) must possess the following minimum education and experience:
a) Extensive knowledge of all design aspects of unitized, aluminum curtain wall systems, have a strong background in engineering, knowledge of shop drawings, component release methods and related standards;
b) An apprenticeship in metal work or some other relevant field (a European apprenticeship system for our trade guarantees an extensive knowledge of materials, designs, processes, hardware, etc. required to design and build the complex custom curtain wall systems we are seeing in today’s market);
c) A minimum of 6 years combined relevant post-apprenticeship work experience or education;
d) Extensive knowledge specifically in the design and fabrication of European-type, high performance, single, double, active and passive walls; and
e) Exposure to design of high rise commercial, residential and institutional buildings.
This will be a permanent, full-time position with Sota Glazing. The Senior Designer (Drafting Technologist) will work 40 hours per week with a bi-weekly salary to be based on prior knowledge and experience and will be entitled to discretionary profit sharing bonuses. The Senior Designer (Drafting Technologist) will also receive three weeks paid vacation for each complete fiscal year and will be eligible for group medical and life insurance packages.
