Position Details:

  • Job Title: R&D Technologist
  • 1 permanent full time position, occasional evenings and weekends to accommodate production testing
  • Location: Abbotsford, BC
  • Reports to: Director of R&D
  • Annual compensation $48,500

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Formulate new and existing products to meet objectives for sensory and nutritional attributes, quality, cost, timeline, and manufacturability
  • Design and conduct experiments to evaluate the impact of formulation, process and/or changes on finished product quality
  • Coordinate and supervise full-scale production testing to validate new and revised formulations, production parameters and packaging processes
  • Monitor the sensory changes and microbiological shelf life of test products over time based on expected distribution and retail conditions
  • Maintain detailed, comprehensive records of formulations, process parameters, finished product results, sensory evaluation and next steps
  • Troubleshoot technical and production challenges using a combination of research, experimentation, data collection, statistical analysis, pattern analysis and critical thought
  • Recommend, set up, calibrate and operate basic and specialized laboratory equipment


  • Completion of a college program in Food Science, Food Biotechnology or a related discipline, Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science or Food Biotechnology is considered an asset.
  • Experience conducting in-depth technical literature searches; ability to review, evaluate and prepare executive summaries
  • Ability to design and execute experiments based on the scientific method, document results and provide recommendations
  • Working knowledge of the R&D process (planning, testing, documenting)
  • Understanding of food ingredient functionality, food production principles and processes
  • R&D experience in a food production facility, including scale-up of food formulations from bench top prototype to full-scale production
  • Working knowledge of baking principles and processes; hands-on baking experience
  • Familiarity with traditional grain and flour testing methods and interpretation of results
  • Understanding of the chemistry and process of sprouting/germination; experience baking and formulating with sprouted grains and flours
  • Knowledge of gluten free products, processes and requirements; experience baking and formulating with gluten free ingredients
  • Comprehensive knowledge of food microbiology principles; characteristics and growth conditions of potential spoilage organisms; microbiological enumeration and identification methods
  • Understanding of the concept and technological basis for Modified Atmosphere Packaging; experience applying this method to bakery products
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
