Room for Improvement
Cell Culture Associate (Former Employee), Lexington, MADecember 16, 2014
Pros: free lunches and outings, great co-workers
Cons: consistent criticism regarding minor issues, lack of room for growth
During my first year with Shire, I had the opportunity to learn about various aspects of the biotech world, particularly the manufacturing processes. However, due to numerous organizational changes, the room for advancement narrowed causing immense tension between management and the employees.

Management played a huge role in the negativity which surrounded – more... the staff towards the end of my employment. It almost felt as though we were elementary school children based on the way we were being treated and some of the inner-office politics mimicked high school conditions.

The hardest part about the job was being grid-locked into a specific role with no room for growth. The most enjoyable part about the job was the environment fostered by my co-workers; where we were able to aid each other in completing the tasks at hand and build connections which lasted outside of work as well. – less

Good benefts and good work life balance. Managers are dedicated. Hardest part of job is the constant changes ( takeovers, downsizing, Relocations).

Great salary, but very weak IT leadership and no career path
IT Manager (Former Employee), Chesterbrook, PAOctober 13, 2014
Pros: salary, benefits, work/life balance
Cons: leadership, career path, organizational transparency, dishonesty
Shire has had approx. 7 CIOs in the last 10 years. Their newest CIO has been there approx. 12 months. Under his leadership, the old, indecisive IT management team remains in place. There is no sense of strategy or direction, and the company is now in limbo, with the proposed takeover by AbbVie in the news most recently. Furthermore, there is a tremendous – more... lack of transparency and honesty in the IT organization.

Their salary and benefits are awesome, but if you want leadership and a career path, this is not the place to go. – less

Transition Trials
Project Associate (Current Employee), Wayne, PAJune 6, 2014
Pros: great sense of team spirit and collaboration working towards the same end result.
Cons: change management
Currently, I work at the Chesterbrook Site, Shire Pharmaceutical has gone through and continues to go through through a period of transition and downsizing in 2013-2014.

Managing a team of 10, during a time of transition has actually been a period of developmental growth. Although sometimes challenging, the team depends on me for consistency, communication, – more... and process control.

As you can imagine, a downsizing can be particularly worrisome for everybody that may be impacted and the unknown. Handling the stress of such an event takes a particular skill at being positive. Some days were quite taxing and other days very exciting as news of the organization would become transparent to the employees of Shire. Managing co-workers feelings on a day-to-day basis proved to be challenging during this time. But determinationm, staying focused and positive kept me going. – less

Contract Senior Training Specialist (Former Employee), Lexington, MAApril 30, 2014
Pros: the company is trying to do things right
Cons: the management culture is very political
Overall this company is an honest, ethical place to work. They are in a very highly regulated industry, and attempt to do things right. The environment at the upper management level is just very political. The AD for Compliance Training, for example, is a terrible manager.
