1. A typical day at work - UAT testing for an MSL and MedComm application - supporting users - adding and deleting users - modifying the system with the vendor.
Testing on a pilot application which is going live within the next 2 months.
2. What you learned - Not everyone should be treated in the same manner - keep personalities in mind. I work well – more... under pressure when required, which is often. I can work every day to learn a better way to do the job processes and improve upon them as a part of my own on-going Lessons Learned activity.
3. Your co-workers - know your co-workers and how to work with them to benefit both myself and my colleagues.
4. The hardest part of the job - Writing scripts at a level where you test all scenarios but not too much testing lest you never get the project into Production.
5. The most enjoyable part of the job - Delivery of very good work in a timely fashion and helping other colleagues to keep the workload processes moving smoothly. – less

Used to be a better company to work for than it is now

Pros: generous benefits
Cons: poor, inconsistent management; poor morale; a feeling of expendability
Shire is a good company that used to be better and seems to be getting worse. They have tightened their belt significantly and let go of a LOT of their sales force (including myself). They were generous to their employees during my five years with them with some room for advancement. Good benefits, an overall pretty liberal and progressive company (recognized, – more... for example, same sex partners for healthcare benefits). But when they started focusing on cutting their sales force to save money, they brought in ruthless managers and made everyone's lives hell. The company's integrity has decreased, but their products are still solid and the company itself a savvy business. – less

Cons: they tend not to hire contactors, so you have to get your own costly insurance.
I worked at Shire for three and half years. Its was a good experience with great co-workers.

An independent work environment which requires a self driven person

Pros: relationship and rapport building is a must, good products to sell and overall great company
Cons: more offices trending toward "no rep" policies, managed care is out of our control and generics
I have 90 targeted physicians I call on which are ranked from 1-90 based on call priority. I set up a detailed, daily itinerary based on factors such as the best times of day to see my physicians/staff and the geographic part of town I'll be in that day. Even though I stick to this itinerary as much as possible, I am constantly updating and revising – more... my schedule based on my target office needs. On every call I am discussing different patient profiles which would benefit most from our medications along with success or limitations of the products that the physician is experiencing. I do this only with FDA- approved resources and visual aids. Also, I present this information to the staff as well. Naturally, I have to adjust my presentation depending on which position I am speaking with. Setting up lunches is a vital part of what I do. Having lunch with the physicians and staff provides significantly more time with them and I feel this is when I am at my best as far as driving results and building rapport with my offices. The hardest part of my job is finding new and creative ways to discuss the same information while staying compliant. The most enjoyable part of my job is that I get to build and maintain relationships with everyone in my target offices. This is something I am truly passionate about and a very enjoyable part of my job. My co-workers and I see each other only a few times a year (professionally) at quarterly meetings but keep in constant contact via conference calls and phone conversations. My employer knows about my relocation to Seattle and my current manager is included in my references. – less

I was at the company for 4 years. It was always busy, lots of micromanagement, playing favorites, back stabbing. Big gap between management and employees. Would not recommend. Might not be true for the whole company, but true for some departments

Pros: competitive sales environment & customer based selling approach
Cons: example: short breaks, healthcare, etc.
This company has a fairly typical work schedule for the pharmaceutical industry. They maintain an ethical sales approach with strict attention to FDA guidelines. The training programs were great and going through the customer based training programs opened my mind to many news ways for approaching physicians and adapting to each office's environment.

Then how come the GI Vice President was fired along with is 5 Zone Directors becausse they were talking "off label?" It is a Federal Crime for Shire to talk "off label" yet they think they can get away with it and do it anyway. Not sure if the FDA even found out yet. It's a federal crime, so there's NO ethics followed at Shire. They do what they want to do. And it's usually illegal.

When I left Shire, I had to take tests regarding software and Shire is using OLD Versions of databases and software. They are NOT up to industry, but shhhh don't tell them, let them believe whatever they want. It is the most unprofessional company of all the Pharmaceutical companies I've worked for.

Shire is an good company and compensation is probably above average for a smaller pharma company. However, over the past few years they have become more "compliance-driven" that has taken some of the individuality away from the employees, especially the sales force. They are migrating towards a "check-the-box" sales organization that is more concerned – more... with preserving what they have, as opposed to driving their business. Shire management is inexperienced and incapable of managing people. My manager never gave me a mid year or year end review or discussed a development plan with me in the two years I worked for him. If you expect mentoring or leadership this is not the company for you.

There are MANY managers at Shire that do not know HOW to manage and DON'T manage at all. They let some take comp time, then the other half of the department is angry because they're not allowed to. Issues aren't addressed, instead they are swept under the rug. There are VERY FEW good managers at Shire. Shire promotes the WRONG people and it's making the compay a complete failure.
