Sasamat Outdoor Centre Program and Outdoor Education Director (Internal/External Posting)

Sasamat Outdoor Centre, a member of the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of British Columbia (ANHBC), is currently seeking a creative and goal oriented individual to join our senior management team at Sasamat as our Program and Outdoor Education Director.

As an experienced leader, the successful candidate will demonstrate a proven record of planning, developing and delivering high quality camping experiences for children, youth and families and the ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers and general public.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Program and Outdoor Education Director will be responsible for four key areas with some of the duties listed as follows (a full Job Description is available upon request):

  • Program Management and Development

o Direct, plan, organize, implement, monitor and evaluate the delivery of all camp programs and activities o Develop and prepare funding proposals for programs and identify new funding opportunities
o Plan, administer, monitor and control program budgets

  • Human Resource Management

o Plan and deliver a comprehensive onsite staff training program
o Establish and maintain an HR plan including recruitment, retention and performance management

  • Internal and External Relationship

o Represent Sasamat Outdoor Centre and ANHBC on committees and in the community o Establish relationships with Neighbourhood Houses and other community organizations o Communicate with campers, parents, teachers and community groups

  • Marketing and Communication

o Gather stories and pictures to document and highlight programs and activities at Sasamat Outdoor Centre o Promote and market programs through media and community events
o Communicate to staff and public through website, social media and print media


  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant field
  • Minimum of three years of recent camp experience in a management role
  • Extensive knowledge of the organized camping industry and the requirements for delivery of high quality resident and day camp programs and outdoor education programming for schools and community groups
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop, and support culturally competent programming
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven leadership ability to guide and motivate staff and volunteers
  • Ability to work under pressure, set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong oral and written English communication skills; second language considered an asset
  • Proficiency with computers software and internet applications, MS Word, Excel and social media (such as Facebook)
  • WCB First Aid Level 1; WCB First Aid Level 2 an asset
  • Class 4 driver’s license
  • Clearance of Criminal Record Check
  • Certification in specific recreational activities (i.e. RCABC advanced canoeing, ACCT challenge course) an asset

Closing Date: November 14, 2013
Hourly Wage: Starting at $25.59 (ANHBC Band 11)
Terms of Employment: Regular full time position; 35 hours per week
