Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for design of protection schemes for industrial and utility substation.
  • Evaluate the interoperability, control features, and communication/protocol aspects of protective relays
  • Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to SCADA engineers, substation physical engineers, and control design staff in order to fully develop system integration of protection, control, and monitoring systems
  • Work with team to meet project specifications, cost control, and schedule objectives
  • Interface with internal and external team members such as Principal engineers, Project Engineers, Electrical Designers, Physical Designers, Draftsmen, Project managers, and support organizations
  • Perform power system load flow studies, fault studies, relay setting coordination, and transient studies
  • Prepare the procedure and support factory acceptance testing and site testing & commissioning
  • Design and review control system specification and wiring diagrams
  • Coordinate with engineers, technicians and other staff from multiple disciplines
  • Assist the project manager when help is needed
  • Perform all other related tasks that will help complete the project
  • Work is assigned in terms of objectives, relative priorities and critical areas that impinge on work of other units
  • Execute engineering activities (Concept, Front End Engineering Development, Technical Study & Detailed Design)
  • Ensure that designs comply with the relevant Codes, Standards, Regulations and Procedures
  • Willingness and ability to travel (15% - 25% typical) including international (required for meetings and on-site commissioning tests for customer installations)
  • Design and review schematic for generator, transformer, bus, feeder protection
  • Design and review one line, three line diagrams for overall power distribution, transmission, generation system


  • BS or BE with major Electrical Engineering degree preferably in power systems with emphasis on faulted power systems and protective relaying
  • 5 years experience in Power Engineering
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in system protection schemes, relay selection, settings development, operational analysis, communication systems and maintenance practices for transmission, distribution, and generation protection applications
  • Must have knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, industry norms, standards and methods of construction
  • Knowledge of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), International Electro-technical Commission (IEC), and CSA standards
  • Prior SCADA, Substation Automation or Substation Physical design experience
  • P&C field testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting experience
  • Previous experience with High Voltage in utility protection and control design
  • Good presence in front of customer with demonstrated commercial experience
  • Experience with logic development in protection IED’s, PLC, PAC, RTU
  • Experience with preparing electrical drawings using AutoCAD and/or Microstation
  • Experience in engineering consulting will be considered an asset
  • Good initiative, attention to details
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Sales experience is a bonus
