Great Environment, Terrible management
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Kitchener, ONFebruary 3, 2014
Great environment if you love being around children daily! Terrible place to work if you want to get along with your boss, be treated fairly, get decent hours, and to be paid for the labour you are doing.
The owner has terrible manners, talks down to you and is not honest. Neither is more than half of her staff.

A Fun and Family Oriented Place
Key Holder / Buyer - Laid Off - Ownership Change (Former Employee), Newmarket, ONApril 2, 2012
Pros: teamwork, family oriented, fun, social
Cons: owners sold it
I loved working at this store with the staff that was there before the owners sold it and laid me off.

Everyone I worked with was just like family and treated each other as if they were. We were a very close knit team that worked very well together.

Overall it is a great place to work, like every business it has its ups and downs but after being there a while the people you work with end up more like family vs just friends and co-workers

Sales Associate (Former Employee), Lafayette, INNovember 12, 2014
Working at Once Upon A Child was a fast paced environment. Customer service was the top priority. I processed multiple orders, sorted items, stocked racks, and handled large amounts of revenue daily. I was also responsible for many opening procedures. My co-workers were helpful and pleasant to be around. We worked well together and had fun. I enjoyed – more... seeing customers faces when they were told that they were going to get more money back for their items than they thought. – less

A typical work day consists of multiple duties. We have a buying process that lasts until about an hour before we close. After buying we are responsible for tagging the items that we have purchased. We have multiple phone calls throughout the day as well.
My co-workers are great we all work together as a team to make sure things are done in an orderly – more... manner and done properly.
There are a few moments within some days that are a little more challenging but never hard. I cope with all the things I have learned in the past six years with customer service to handle situations to the best of my ability. – less

Pros: working with the public, co-workers, and the owners were undeerstanding
Everyday at Once Upon A Child is considered a hectic day but I don't mind it at all. It keeps me busy and makes the time go by faster. What I did everyday that I work is I greet the customers who bring in their gently used items. I sign them in and then go through their items. I separate the ones we keep and the ones to return back to the customer. – more... After doing so I print out an amount of how much we will pay the customer. When the customer comes back I make the offer to them and if they accept the offer then either write them a check if it's over $25 or give cash to the customer if it's under $25.
During the time I'm there I help hang up clothes, bag the toys, put price tickets on the items, and put them out on the floor. Meanwhile doing so I would help the customers find items they came in looking for or carry out big items to there car. I run the cash register. Before closing time everyone is assign a duty but at the same time help each other to finish all the duties together. Every time I work was enjoyable because you get to meet new people, tag items, walk around and help customers, keying in the item into the system. My co-workers were awesome, the moment I started they offer me a helping hand and never made me feel like I was the new girl. It was wonderful because the schedule was flexible and the owners they encourage use to go to school. – less

Fun workplace with good people
Manager (Current Employee), Niles, OHOctober 8, 2014
Pros: partial ownership
Cons: expectations of harder work than co-workers
While working for Upon a Child, I learned how to run a business from the inside out. I am a manager, but my family has actually started the franchise. Since I am on the inside, my duties vary depending on what needs done. I have done everything from closing the store to completing bank reconciliations to making runs to the bank for petty cash to janitorial – more... duties. The co-workers were very enjoyable, and we act like our own little family. The hardest part of the job would most likely be the extra after hours work I had to put forth to help keep the business running smoothly. The most enjoyable part, however, is seeing the business flourish because of our hard work. – less

Horrible owners
❸ Assistant Manager ❸ (Former Employee), Arnold, MOOctober 4, 2014
Pros: good first jpb
Cons: no room to advance
Each Once Upon a Child has a different owner and the one I worked for the owners were horrible. They treated their employees with horrible. The idea of the kids resale shop is great but I feel like company needs to take the time to make sure the have to right people who buy into their company and run stores. There is no room for advancement to grow – more... with the company. I received my degree in business and asked my managers about any room for advancement or full time and they told me no the company does not offer that. It was good for my first job to get into retail. – less

Sales Associate and Floor Assistant (Former Employee), Flower Mound, TXSeptember 22, 2014
Every day as an Once Upon a Child employee we were always busy, whether it was assisting customers at the cash register, taking the clothes on the rack out to the floor or tagging items. There was always something to do which was the most enjoyable part for me. The hardest part of the job is that we must do everything in a quick manner.

Pros: very flexible work schedule, family oriented.
Cons: store closed down.
Helped train associates, open/close store, customer service. Management provided a very flexible work schedule. The hardest part of the job is the day we closed our doors due to going out of business.

Great place to bring out the child by playing with the toys that come in.
Shift Leader (Current Employee), CincinnatiSeptember 10, 2014
Pros: getting a discount on all ready cheap prices...its wonderful
Cons: getting sent home early because of not making sales goal for the day
It's busy and can get very overwhelming however working with the coworkers and knowing that you are not the only person who feels like it will never ends is wonderful. We all have work together and get the job done. The hardest part about the job is knowing its time to go and there are still things that need but do not have the time to finish it. I – more... love seeing new inventory that come in everyday. – less

Pros: customers
The customers were amazing! A typical day was different then most, nothing was routine, I learned that women are hard to work with. The management was amazing, she really knew what she was doing, but never got appreciated. Most enjoyable part of job was joking with customers and laughing with children.

Uncomfortable, unstable and unfair place to work
Shift Manager (Former Employee), Mesquite, TXAugust 23, 2014
Pros: there is always something that needs to be done.
Cons: too much burden on those that pull their weight by those that don't.
The place lacks sound management and a support system that fosters positive employee moral, teamwork and fairness across the board. The work schedule is posted within a few days of the next work week, not allowing for you to plan things outside of work.

Cons: not a good environment.
Coworkers were disrespectful and very "catty," and management did not respect the schedule or the workers. Also not a clean workplace.
