Not yet omnipresent, Omni Hotels has a portfolio of 50 hotel properties in the US, Canada, and Mexico. The luxury lodgings are targeted to business travelers and upscale tourists. In addition to comfortable room accommodations, the properties offer business and fitness centers, high-speed and wireless Internet access, and gourmet restaurants. Omni Hotels owns most of its hotels, but also franchises a small number of properties. The company's Select Guest is a loyalty program that offers more personalized services for returning members. Texas oil billionaire Robert Rowling owns Omni Hotels through his family's holding company, TRT Holdings.
Omni Hotels in recent years has become focused on owning and operating convention-center hotels, which are attractive thanks to their built-in client base. The company has been selected to operate the Dallas Convention Center Hotel; the 1,000-room hotel is on schedule to open in 2012. Elsewhere in the country, Nashville's Convention Center Authority in 2010 chose Omni to build an 800-room hotel adjacent to the city's convention center. These hotels join the company's existing convention-center properties in Atlanta, Ft. Worth, and San Diego.
The upscale hotelier also bucked the recession-era trend of scaling back operations by opening several new properties in the last couple of years. In 2010 the company added the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire to its portfolio; later in 2010 it purchased the Amelia Island Plantation, located about 30 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida. The previous year it opened the Omni Fort Worth Hotel, and became the operator of the Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa in Pennsylvania.
In addition to growing its portfolio, the company is trying to boost business through making a series of improvements at it properties. In 2011 its Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza unveiled a multi-million dollar renovation. The previous year it completed a renovation at the Omni Berkshire Place in New York. The updated look features amenities such as mahogany furniture and new flat screen TVs. Also among Omni's recent upgrades is an upscale spa concept called Mokara. The company in 2010 launched Mokara Hotels & Spas, a line of luxury boutique hotels featuring Mokara Spas.
The company was founded by Walter Dunfey with the opening of Lamie's Motor Inn in Hampton, New Hampshire in 1958. Dunfey Hotels became Omni Hotels in 1983 with the acquisition of Omni International Hotels. TRT Holdings acquired the firm in 1996. – less
