About Oakley

Oakley sells so many sunglasses, it goggles the mind. The company makes and sells performance sunglasses and ski goggles for sports and fashion enthusiasts. Oakley is known for its lens technologies, including 3D, and especially for its High-Definition Optics. The brand boasts a retail network of more than 160 Oakley "O" and Vaults stores in malls throughout – more... the US, and in Europe, Mexico, and Asia-Pacific region. It also sells its wares online and at  Dillard's, Sunglass Hut, sporting goods stores and other specialty retail outlets. Oakley also markets a line of apparel and footwear, as well as backpacks and accessories for sports enthusiasts. Founded in 1975, Oakley is owned by Italian eyewear giant Luxottica.

Oakley has posted double-digit sales growth each year since being acquired by Luxottica in late 2007, and has grown to top $1.1 billion in sales. The world's top eyewear manufacturer bought Oakley at a cost of more than $2 billion. The sale gave Oakley access to Luxottica's global distribution and retail platforms. Luxottica, which had struggled to attain a firm foothold in the US market, gained an extended reach into the US and benefited from Oakley's retail performance and technology experience.

An innovator in performance optics, Oakley has extended its reach into new niches through partnerships with other key players. Oakley and Motorolaentered a joint venture to develop wearable Bluetooth hands-free devices. The eyewear line, named RAZRWire, was created for active mobile-phone users. Oakley also partnered with Florida's Transitions Optical to integrate photochromics with Oakley prescription optics.

Since joing Ray-Ban as a Luxottica house brand, Oakley has been looking for new customers worldwide through brand recognition. The company is working to strengthen its brand, especially in Europe. The plan includes debuting new models of sports and high-performance eyewear, in addition to enhancing its optical and women's collections. It's also designing more models that make use of its sun lens technology, found in some high-performance styles. A big focus for the firm, which makes ski goggles, is European mountain resorts.

Oakley's eyewear is assembled in California (where the company is based). It has a second manufacturing facility in Dayton, Nevada. – less
