Roles and responsibilities: Position Summary

The Senior Mechanical Designer will closely interact with engineers and the manufacturing and
production departments in an effort to design and produce new and innovative products that
lead the market. In addition, the designer (engineer) will investigate opportunities to improve
on existing product performance and efficiency. The use of skilled engineering analysis and
judgment with a strong desire to exceed expectations in every way is paramount to position
success.

Responsibilities

  • Define and design new product components and subsystems for new markets and

re-design of current products

  • Apply sound engineering principles to turn ideas into technical plans, which encompass

the generation of models, drawings, parts lists and specifications that meet targeted
product requirements

  • Consideration of various factors, including use of the product, its environment,

materials, the economics of production, safety, legal requirements, quality, production
requirements, cost and ease of assembly and maintenance

  • Liaise with the marketing, service, and product management departments to identify

"next release" solutions. Use knowledge of the existing product to conceptualize how
the product would change to accommodate new solutions

  • Liaise with development engineers about the application of advanced technologies to

improve product performance and reduce costs

  • Liaise with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve

equipment deficiencies, and provide technical information

  • Develop methods and participate in their implementation for the testing and evaluation

of prototypes to ensure the feasibility, design, operation and performance of equipment,
components and systems according to defined product requirements

  • Work within Project Budget and Timeline constraints and provide progress reports in

writing or presentation formats for managers

  • Liaise with other departments to establish and coordinate the maintenance and safety

procedures, service schedule, and supply of materials required to maintain machines
and equipment in the prescribed condition

  • Liaise with vendors and Purchasing to specify and coordinate procurement of

development parts and assemblies

  • Provide mentoring, to assist CAD operators in developing the structural design of

products, and in the use of CAD equipment and software

  • Perform duties of CAD operator as may be required
  • Deliver prototypes, mock-ups, and design specifications for your designs

Skill set: B Sc, B Eng or M Eng degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) is preferable.

  • Engineering Technician with emphasis on Machine Design
  • Minimum 5 years design experience in machine design, product design consumer

products, automotive, or other related industry

  • A sound knowledge of CAD software (Creo Parametric 2.0 or previous Pro/E releases)
  • An excellent grasp of engineering and mechanical design principles
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and fluent in the use of Microsoft Office
  • An understanding of manufacturing processes and assembly methods
  • Good team working skills
  • An understanding of weld fabrication and sheet metal fabrication design guidelines
  • Appropriate application of Project Management tools and methodology

Work experience: 5 or more years
