Poor Training, expected to do all the rigs stuff after you get hired
Solids Control Technician / Excavator Operator (Former Employee) –  Leduc, AB19 January 2018
Drillsite Division

Poor Training, No tools when out on site due to guys not putting things back, or no tools at all, get hired to mix and load trucks, but have to load/unload product/ pipe, be the rigs helper for less than lease hand wage, get pushed hard all day having to deal with rig support and what you need to get done. Some days you'd be lucky to get to eat. Can charge by the km but after the fact only to closest hub.(ie: if your based out of Leduc and having to work near Grand Prairie only able to charge from GP. Lots of wear and tear on personal trucks.
Pros
Some good guys to work with
Cons
Poor Management, and pay for the work you end up doing

This company has its ups and downs like any other. I have learned a lot working for Newalta and the job can be challenging and rewarding at times. The work isn't difficult most days.

Used to be a great company.
Labourer (Former Employee) –  Calgary, AB17 June 2017
Sad to see the decline of a once great company. New culture in organization places no value on employees knowledge or experience. It views employees only as a cost and not a resource to generate value.

A very average work place in every way.
Chief Power Engineer/ Operator (Former Employee) –  Stauffer, AB23 January 2017
This was a very physical job. The average worker probably walked 20 km a shift due to the layout of the plant. The company tried to get the maximum out of each worker which sometimes put allot of pressure on the employees. The hardest part of the job was getting along with some of the employees. It took time, but in the end it worked out fine. The most enjoyable part of the job was two fold: Working with customers and the satisfaction of accomplishing my tasks well.
Pros
Good benefits

It is all about keeping one company happy
Senior Operator (Former Employee) –  Saint John, NB12 December 2016
They say you will be a senior operator but you are just a labourer, filthy work and everything you work with could cause cancer. Company which Newalta does most of the work for has no respect for the environment and Newalta wouldn't say anything to any environmental agencies, just help the company cover it up. I seen water ways which lead into the ocean completely covered in oil for weeks and not one federal agency called or put on notice.
Pros
The day i left
Cons
everything you work could cause cancer.

Productive environment to work
Branch Manager (Former Employee) –  Stauffer, AB5 November 2016
Newalta was a very good company to work for in the past and had a very strong management group. Over the past couple years this has changed and not for the better. With changes to the senior management, there is now a disconnect between the employees and upper management. Unchecked this may lead to an unstable business.
Pros
you get out of it what you put in
Cons
lack of communication between high level management and employees

I enjoyed my time with the company and the shift work.
Operator (Former Employee) –  Stauffer, AB28 September 2016
Some days were really busy and more people were needed. I was trained by several good guys and was able to expand my knowledge and pass it on to the many new hires over the years. Management over all was pretty easy to talk too but were a little slow getting things done at times. I worked with a lot of good guys over the years but also some useless ones. I didn't find the job overly hard due to the fact that i am a quick learner, well organized and can perform multiple tasks at once. I really enjoyed the family atmosphere with my co-workers and the shifts.
Pros
The good people and the shifts
Cons
The bad people and overly busy days.
