Northern International Inc. is a privately held company that develops, manufactures, warehouses, markets, and sells a comprehensive array of innovative and top quality products aimed at the Home Improvement/Home Decor Market.

We are currently in search of a Computer Systems Administrator to join our growing company in our Markham, ON location. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Candle Division, with dotted line to Assistant Controller, this position will maintain the Toronto office's computer hardware and software systems to ensure smooth functioning; support internal users for hardware and software issues; assist in hardware/software purchases, IT planning and budgeting.


  • Provide user administration for Windows server
  • Manage Outlook software and email archiving and Exchange connectivity
  • Administer the Apple server and integration to PC server
  • Establish and maintain a trouble ticket system and provide IT Help desk support for Toronto office
  • Escalate support issues to corporate office when necessary
  • Coordinate the upgrade of software as required by business needs or directed by corporate office
  • Assist, recommend and coordinate hardware purchases for Toronto office and associated offices, and assist with all corporate hardware and software initiatives
  • Establish and maintain documentation of hardware and software inventory on regular basis, for planning and renewal purpose
  • Conduct IT planning and budgeting
  • Administer and monitor back-ups of entire server, user data, and Mac servers and user data
  • Coordinate with external software and hardware vendors to solve issues with 3rd party solutions
  • Maintain the Fortigate/security administration, firewall rules, QoS
  • Maintain Norton/Kaspersky Antivirus systems
  • Ensure operability of Life Size video conference system
  • Perform disaster recovery tests of all systems and server de-dust semi-annually
  • Assist in integrating other systems (UPS/FEDEX) with office processes and systems
  • Establish and monitor the execution of IT procedures and policies, and document key processes and procedures
  • Coordinate and conduct MS Office and MS Outlook skills development training, and train users in appropriate use of technology and new software and services
  • Image and/or deploy end user PCs as needed
  • Other related duties as required

Academic/Educational Requirements:

  • Diploma or Degree in Computer Science and/or Network Administration, or equivalent experience
  • Microsoft Certification (MCSE or MCSA)

Required Skills/Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years working on computer networking, application implementation, maintenance and customer support
  • A minimum of 2 years managing a Windows Server and Active Directory
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures related to computer equipment and software applications
  • Ability to install, configure, operate, and maintain computer equipment, networks and software applications (Windows Server/antivirus/Citrix, Fortigate, ACCESS, GP, EDI)
  • Ability to identify, investigate, assess, document, and resolve network, software and hardware problems
  • Comfortable working at a detailed level but are also a strategic thinker with an exceptional ability to problem solve and to analyze numbers in terms of their impact on the big picture
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Independent, pro-active and a self-starter
  • Enjoy working in a growing, fast-paced environment while multi-tasking and remaining flexible to allow for changing priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively with all levels of an organization.
  • Robust understanding of MS Office environment and functionality
  • VBM, SQL, or equivalent coding experience preferred but not required
