Medicine Hat College’s Conservatory of Music and Dance invites applications for the position of Violin/Viola Instructor.
Medicine Hat College is located in Medicine Hat, Alberta, “Canada’s Sunniest City.” Medicine Hat, a vibrant city of over 60,000 people, is a prairie oasis rich in history and unique attractions situated on the banks of the South Saskatchewan river in southeastern Alberta, less than an hour’s drive from the fabled Cypress Hills and less than three hours drive from the spectacular Rocky Mountains. Medicine Hat is the major economic hub of the region, as well as its education, culture, and tourism centre. The city boasts a wealth of facilities and services, including the state-of-the-art Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre and the famous Medalta Potteries historic site.
The Conservatory of Music and Dance, which enjoys the specialized facilities and beautiful surroundings of the college’s Cultural Centre, has more than 20 full-time faculty and serves well over 1,100 registrants annually in a wide variety of music and dance areas, from classical and jazz to modern and popular.
This position is a core position in the conservatory’s string department. The teaching assignment consists of private studio and master class instruction as well as chamber music coaching. Included as well is a significant leadership role in both the conservatory’s Academy Program, a prestigious and comprehensive pre-professional program for senior students, and the Academy Orchestra, a unique string ensemble comprised of string faculty and senior students.
The position is potentially full-time for the ten-month term beginning September, 2013, and then is annually renewable subject to performance reviews and student enrolments. Recent years’ enrolments suggest the potential for significantly more than the 700 teaching hours over 35 weeks that constitutes a full-time position at the conservatory. Remuneration is on an hourly fee-for-student/class basis. As a senior position, its hourly rate will range between $35 and $60 per hour. As a full-time position, it also comes with an attractive benefits package, consisting of extended health and dental coverage as well as group life and long term disability insurance.
Candidates for this position should have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree; a master’s degree is preferred. Candidates with strong teaching experience, especially of students aged 5-18, are especially encouraged to apply.
Please submit your resume, a cover letter quoting competition #113113, relevant supporting materials (including performance recordings), and the names of three references. Deadline for receipt of applications is June 21, 2013, after which the selection process will commence; however, this competition will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
This position will require the successful candidate to present a valid Police Information/Criminal Record Check and a valid Child & Youth Services Intervention Record Check.
