Think twice
Sales associate (Current Employee), Central Kansas – March 17, 2013
After leaving a career in healthcare (as a Registered Nurse) to pursue a career in customer service/retail, I was very disappointed in Maurices when i was offered a position as a sales associate at $8.40/hour (on the "high end of the pay scale", as I was told). The manager has proven to be condescending and passive aggressive. Several days after my – more... start date, I came in to work to be abruptly confronted by the manager who said "what time do you have?", I said "1:01" (I was scheduled to be at work at 1:00). The manager said "Exactly, you are supposed to be here at 1:00. One minute becomes five minutes becomes 15 minutes. If you weren't a new employee, I would write you up". At the interview I was instructed that I must never clock in before 3 minutes until the start of my shift. Therefore, there must be no conclusion other than that I must arrive at work between 3 'til and on the hour (even though some peoples' watches differ by often times at least 2-3 minutes). Maurices is a perfect example of how NOT to manage a property. Managers need to understand that if they can't retain an employee for more than 6 months, it has everything to do with the management, NOT the employee. Maurice also promotes a very pushy sales policy. You will leave every day feeling like a "pushy salesperson". I currently still work at a Maurices in centrtal Kansas and am only waiting until a better job opportunity presents itself to put in my notice. Ultimately, Mauricues takes advantage of their employees (who typically work hard) just to make a dollar. A shameful place to work for. The manager at my location seems to have been consumed by her desire to submit her authority to those she deems inferior to her. I encourage all those who desire a career in retail to think twice before accepting an offer from Maurices. – less

Great envorinment, and customers. Loved the culture
Assistant Manager (Former Employee), Belleville, IL – February 11, 2013
Pros: great atmosphere
Cons: working weekends and nights, and holidays. sometimes i didn't get to take lunches and breaks.
From the moment a customer walked in the door, I loved that we would take care of them! All of their concerns, questions, body size and style were taken into account when being part of their shopping experience. When there weren't customers to help, I would organize/fold merchandise and set sales/promotions, work on scheduling, plan community events. – more... I had amazing co-workers who took very well to tasks at hand. We had a very friendly, yet very professional environment that was immediately noticed and felt when entering the store. One of the more difficult aspects of the job would have been the balance between tasking and still focusing on the customer. I thoroughly enjoyed the relationships I developed with my co-workers as well as the shoppers. – less

Great Ascena company but absolutely awful management!
Part-time Sales Associate (Current Employee), Richland, WA – February 8, 2013
Pros: employee discount, clothes, school accommodating
Cons: management
It truly is run by young women under 30 so there is an awful lot of "high school" type of remarks and a lot of attitude. Great training format! Other associates are fabulous to work with but like I mentioned, caddy at times. The boss is so stuck up and always needs to be the center of attention. The most enjoyable is the employee discount, girly atmosphere, – more... and great company (Ascena.) Typical shift is getting up dated on sales and inventory, cleaning the store, and interacting with some of the best customers ever! – less

Being around clothes was the only fun I had at this job...
Assistant Manager (Former Employee), Tifton, GA – February 2, 2013
Pros: clothes
Cons: management, mainly at this store.
I would get called in because the manager didn't want to show up. I was a part-time Assistant Manager working 36-39 hour weeks and was not appreciated. I was constantly being lied to and she rarely answered the phone when I needed assistance. It seemed like she didn't care about her job and her employees and so I went to find a better job where my employer – more... would care about my well-being and my work-life balance. After I left, 3 other employees left because of her behavior. Something needs to be done. – less

I worked in the evening for Maurices. I enjoyed working with the public, stocking and meeting sales quotas. The hardest part of the job was working in the evenings.

Fun busy work atmosphere
Store Manager (Current Employee), Ankeny, IA – January 25, 2013
Pros: discount on clothes
Cons: retail hours
The best part is getting to help and know your customers. Not only do you get to help them find clothes that make them look and feel their best but you also become "friends" with them. The hardest part of the job is keeping your team motivated every day.

Sales Associate (Former Employee), The Dalles, OR – January 22, 2013
This company excells at training for sales. It does seem like you have to work there for quite a bit of time in order to advance into upper management. The Sales Associate position is fast paced and fun and you will enjoy getting regular customers.

Good company, poor management
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Beavercreek, Ohio – January 1, 2013
Pros: great customers and discounts
Cons: life balance, over worked
The manager could not schedule well, and could not keep a staff so sales associates were overworked. Usally should work about 13-20 was what they were told and they would work up to 30 or almost 40. The sales were usually rotated if the store was busy if not the sales went to who ever worked with the customer, but the 1st assistant regularly took the – more... sales associate sales then would apologize and say she "forgot". The credit card goal/requirement was way to high, most people I asked in retail thought the same thing. We were basically taught to peer pressure people into getting credit cards. Working was fun if working with the right people, but the day would drag on with the wrong people – less

Upbeat atmosphere great teamwork but difficult hours
SALES ASSOCIATE (Former Employee), Columbia, MO – December 27, 2012
Pros: employee discount 40%
Cons: long hours, weeknights, and weekends
Appealing to customers can be difficult depending on how cooperative they are. If you are a natural born salesman this will be the easiest job ever. If you are not it would be trying but do-able.
Creating and building relationships with customers and employees was one of the best parts about Maurices. I made lifelong friends and became more familiar – more... with my hometown.
Being able to organize the sales floor and build outfits for mannequins and customers made being a salesperson fun.
However, maintaining the expectations for sales proved to be difficult you end up spending a lot of time and energy in pushing customers to spend more money, which is not something I appreciated doing. – less

Getting to help people feel their best everyday was great.
First Assistant Manager (Former Employee), Clayton, NC – December 5, 2012
Pros: helping people shop, pay was good, fun enviroment
Cons: schedule, management was not steady in descision making
I would open store and count the cashbox. Report the numbers from the day before. Read emails and reports from Intranet, then print and file them. Make goal plan for the day to make sure everything would get finished. Then focus on costumers through out the day while tasking between costumers.

MANAGER wasnt a very nice person
MANAGER/1ST ASSISTANT (Former Employee), Paintsville, KY – October 29, 2012
It was a must to talk people into getting a credit card. The more you sold the more hours you could work. So making it a must to talk people into spending money they couldnt afford just to have hours to work. Manager made several employees cry if she didnt like them.
