Maurice Sporting Goods stocks the stores with gear you need for fun outdoors. As one of the largest sporting goods distributors in North America, the company provides athletics, boating, camping, fishing, and hunting equipment to both domestic and international retailers and mass merchandisers. It operates about five warehouses in the US and Canada that supply The Sports Authority, Kmart, Modell's, and Wal-Mart, among others. Maurice Sporting Goods maintains partnerships with more than 1,000 product vendors. The company was founded as a sporting goods store by Maurice and Mae Olshansky in 1923. It is still family owned.
Despite the global economic downturn, demand for outdoor recreational equipment and sporting goods remains healthy because gear can be relatively inexpensive and used repeatedly for years. Maurice, in addition to providing distribution services, aims to capitalize on the trend by helping to develop athletic equipment. In 2011 the company teamed up with sporting goods designers Big Game International and Designed4Group to create Soccer for Kids, a play kit geared to children who are learning how to play soccer. (The kit comes with an instructional DVD, soccer balls, shin guards, and other accessories.) The companies plan to continue working together to create other sports kits for children. – less
