Stressful place for Opticians
Licensed Optician (Former Employee) –  Etobicoke, ON26 November 2017
Depending on the location, it can be very busy. Always short-staffed for opticians. You'd be lucky to take a proper break without having to be called back out from lunch break. The pay is decent. You'll do well if you can sale while dispensing and checking jobs and taking measurements all while calming customers down who have been waiting for over an hour... all at the same time.

Fun product, sneaky and uncaring management
any position (Former Employee) –  Ontario20 November 2017
Product is great and fun to deal with but the upper management and district managers are terrible. Company will deny raises based on thefts of part time associates. Company also likes to terminate positions for management and not allow those associates after years of being there to drop down they simply say "we terminated your position and we have no where to put you." Very unprofessional higher management.
Pros
great discount
Cons
very little pay and little hours

Was a great company years ago
Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Washington17 November 2017
Sunglass Hut... This company has gone through alot of changes over the recent years. This company use to offer a very rewarding pay structure for those who performed well. Earning up to 5% commission and bonuses. They have restructured pay 4 times in the past year alone and it's become a serious joke. There is no consistency in goals over LY and that's how you bonus and make commission in this company. Once you take the business to its near maximum potential for the area you live in, it's like hitting the ceiling. Yearly raises are laughable and insulting averaging 1 to 2% even with good performance and gains. You have to be committed to this job 100% as it will require alot of attention to be successful. You will receives calls in your time off, have to drop everything for people not showing up for whatever reason, or if people quit before you have planned PTO you are canceling your vacation... it happened to me multiple times. Alot of managers seem to have a hard time even using their PTO or holiday time off before it expires. It can be hard to balance having too many employees or too little... And with recent labor reduction it's hard to keep any quality employees, nevermind develop them into super stars that will help earn you money... cause if the store doesn't hit goal NO ONE makes commission on the team. The people calling the shots higher up I assume have zero experience in the field as they are rolling out more micromanaging task than actual strategies to improve overall business and development. They are trying to spend as little as possible to just gross as much as  more... possible at this point, seeing employees as 'cost' and not real players in the game. Home office support is so terrible you have to wonder who is in charge of it all and let it get so bad. This is a good stepping stone business for new managers now a days and that's about it. Future advancement is not likely and they have reduced field/area manager positions in the last year too. Use this company to learn some great customer service and leadership skills and go find yourself a real sales career where your income isn't so limited. If you're complacent and a middle of the road kind of person this job might be right for you.  less
Pros
Free sunglasses, good foundation for learning to run a business, managing, and sales skills
Cons
Income potential is limited, long stretches of work days and hours, one manager show

USED to be a great company!
General Manager (Former Employee) –  Toronto, ON13 November 2017
Company has been going downhill for years!
To replace your top guy every year or two will never change the culture or behaviors in your stores. Listen to your people and let them be part of the solution! Quit looking at them as part of the problem!
used to be a proactive company now they just react to everything going on. No longer a visionary place to work.
SO MANY unhappy employees not making what they used to.
Look somewhere else that actually has a great culture because this companies culture is now horrible.
Pros
Great training..Free pair of glasses once a year
Cons
Terrible culture, poor pay, good luck making commission with unattainable goals, Terrible upper level management from overseas!

This is not a real job
Eyewear Consultant (Former Employee) –  Mississauga, ON22 October 2017
This job was a major joke. First off, training is basically 30 hours spread over 2 MONTHS. On top of the nonexistent hours ( avg 2 4 hours per week) pay is min wage and bonuses couldnt buy you lunch. Was eventually let go despite no warnings or even a phone call, just

Management was unapproachable and often unreachable. Fulltime hours only for managers. Run for your life.

Great supplementary job
Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) –  Ottawa, ON28 September 2017
Used to love working here but they will not give anyone more than casual part time. Had to get another job to make ends meet. Pay is minimum wage unless you're an optician or manager. My manager specifically was extremely insensitive. Told me "at some point you have to move on" after a family death because she needed me to work that week.
Pros
great discounts
Cons
No advancement, no employee appreciation

Part-time Sales Associate (Former Employee) –  Halifax, NS25 September 2017
Sunglass Hut is great spot to work. The staff I worked with was great, the benefits and chance for advancement is wonderful, and if you work hard the commission at Christmas can be pretty great!

Lab Technician (Former Employee) –  Arizona, MB5 September 2017
It was great at first but then the gossiping and backstabbing and drug use was too much and the guy managers trying to F em and talk inappropriately to women or about women etc etc made me feel uncomfortable and uneasy since i love and respect women like my Mom and daughters so it was very disrepsectful i can go on but the point is made

Licensed Optical Manager (Current Employee) –  Oshawa, ON24 August 2017
difficult to make changes in a large company. commission structure continued to change for the worse. Those that work will get rewarded better and if you have a good boss you'll do fine. Beware of the other employees who play the "I don't speak English/I have a "disability"" card. all a scam so they can be lazy.

Working at Sunglass Hut has been the most amazing experience of my life. Everyone is really friendly and there is so much that you learn from everyone. Not only from your superiors, but from your coworkers and from the customers that come in. I have such a better understanding about different brands and types of frames and lenses. I love Sunglass Hut

Sales Associate (Current Employee) –  Edmonton, AB21 June 2017
The staff and managers were very nice.
only complaint was that there just isn't very many hours to go around and the pay is very little above minimum wage.
other than that I can't complain and those two things aren't any ones fault anyways.
Pros

Good place to work for students
Assistant Manager (Former Employee) –  Edmonton, AB19 June 2017
A day at the hut was usually busy, always something to do. i learned tons of different sales tactics here, but the one thing i learned the most was theft. sun glass hut has very high theft issues, cause of that i learned all the things to look for in situations, and how to deal with them, and all the paper work that goes with it. Management was ok, little to pushy, i understand why but sometimes being little to pushy with staff can just annoy. met a lot of great people and had lots of fun working here.

great discounts
Cons
high theft
