Position: Assistant Grocery Manager
Reports to: Grocery Manager
Location: York Mills

Job Overview
Reporting to the Grocery Manager, this position assists in the management of the Grocery department using budgeted measurements. In conjunction with the Department Manager, this role is accountable for ensuring that the department is prepared for daily operations.

Leadership and People

  • Upholds and models the company‚Äôs values of Honesty, Trustworthiness and Mutual Respect in all actions and behaviours.
  • Assist Manager in hiring, motivating and developing team members and by providing input and feedback for completion of performance appraisals
  • Ensures that team members understand and comply with company standards, policies and procedures including health and safety, loss prevention, food safety and human resource policies i.e. Uniform/dress code
  • Coaches and trains team members to maintain the highest level of personal and team productivity by ensuring strong technical skills and on-going product knowledge
  • Conducts team member 5 minute huddles to ensure strong communication on company initiatives, goals and objectives

Reporting & Administration

  • Ensures proper documentation to facilitate - Operations benchmarking, team member coaching and performance assessments, HR & Payroll related matters and legislative compliance for Health & Food Safety

Department Cleanliness and Presentation

  • Ensures that all team members adhere to food safety, health and workplace safety standards
  • Ensures that all team members adhere to proper sanitization and cleaning procedures

Implementing Department Initiatives

  • Supports Department Manager in implementing of all department initiatives

Financial Objectives

  • Working with Manager on Merchandising Techniques
  • Assist with inventory management
  • Assist with scheduling

Competitor Monitoring

  • Work with Department Manager to monitor local competitors and react to local markets conditions.

Customer Service

  • Consistently demonstrates Genuine Merchant Customer Service and holds himself/herself and team members accountable to maintain set standards
  • Ensures positive customer service relations with a variety of internal customers including Support Centre, other stores and suppliers

Implementing Policies and Standard Operating Procedures
Responsible to implement and train team members on all policies and procedures including:

  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Health and Safety including equipment training
  • Food Safety
  • Loss Prevention
  • Human Resource Policies

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Post secondary education and a minimum of 1 years of food retail experience
  • Proven leadership skills and/or leadership training
  • Good understanding of Grocery department and product knowledge
  • A clean record of performance with no performance or conduct issues within the past two (2) years
  • Ability to verbally communicate with customers and staff to understand what is wanted and expected from them. Enhancing relationships with customers through verbal interaction
  • Strong Creativity skills and ability to create eye catching displays
  • Strong organization and tactical planning skills
  • Strong initiative ability, excellent work ethic and a sense of urgency
  • Ability to work in a high paced time constraint environment
  • Strong sense of ownership, drive and enthusiasm
  • Strong leadership, motivation and mentoring skills
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new situations, as well as new and changing processes, programs and services
  • Strong customer service skills
