A typical day at work would be collaborative meetings with other teachers on IB units of study and evaluation. IB is a holistic approach to learning and all teachers work together in order to successfully complete a unit of study, reflective of the theme of study. Each unit would last approximately 4-6 weeks, depending on the theme of the unit.
It was the first year of opening for King Heights Academy, therefore, management was at the trial and error stage when regular school policies were tested and then implemented. At times, the implementation would be re-evaluated as Ontario and IB standards would not work cohesively with management decisions.
Given that all units of study had to be collaboratively discussed, my co-workers were always approachable and open-minded in discussing new approaches to teaching.
The hardest part of the job was sometimes convincing management of tangible and hands-on experience to teaching as only approaching teaching through textbook scenarios. The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing students enjoying French and retaining the language.
