The Storage SME within IS Infrastructure Support is critical to the provisioning and operation of services to the rest of Suncor. This role provides expert level analytical and infrastructure support of $1.5B in IS Infrastructure to ensure the delivery of reliable services, throughout their operating life cycle (architect, design, build, transition, run), in order to enable applications solutions and meet the service level objectives of various Suncor Business Units.
Responsibilities include continuous improvement and governance & execution of the Asset Lifecycle and Asset Maintenance Strategies, contributing to infrastructure strategies and roadmaps, establishing technical best practices, supporting break/fix and problem management activities, providing input to and reviewing equipment maintenance plans and life cycle strategies, support sustaining infrastructure reliability programs, assessing and reporting on infrastructure-related risks and supporting the operations and project delivery teams with expert level technical guidance and advice. This role would also be involved in and/or lead P1 & P2 Break/Fix events as required.
This role reports to the Program Executive and is a member of the highly collaborative and cross-disciplined IS Infrastructure Operations team. This position works seamlessly in the “One Team” Suncor organization alongside IS Infrastructure, IS Applications, IS Project Delivery, IS Enablement, IS Business Relationship Management and Suncor’s outsource partners and technology vendors during all phases of the operating life cycle.
This role is required to have expert level technical knowledge and provide support to all areas of IS Infrastructure in matters concerning reliability, strategy, roadmaps and work planning and prioritization; “big picture” vision and insight into all aspects of IS Infrastructure, and to a limited extent, IS applications.The role contributes to continuous improvement of existing and identification and evaluation of new policies, technologies, standards and practices within Suncor and Compucom.

Qualifications & Required Knowledge
The following are the specific technical and business skills, knowledge and experience required to perform the position.

  • 10+ years enterprise infrastructure operations experience
  • Post-secondary degree in computer science or a combination of related experience and education.
  • Must have previous experience with implementation of IT projects related to infrastructure solutions with experiences in technical architecture, research, design and implementation
  • Very strong understanding of disciplined IS infrastructure operational methodologies (processes and procedures, availability management, change management, capacity and performance management, life cycle and maintenance strategies, problem identification, issues correlation, root cause analysis, gap analysis, assessments, remediation planning) is required in this role to drive maximum value
  • Demonstrated experience leading and driving collaboration amongst multiple operational teams and project teams to produce desired outcomes
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to build key relationships with stakeholders, up to and including Manager and Director levels
  • Ability to work effectively in an unstructured and largely self-directed work environment with minimal supervision
  • Broad technical awareness and understanding encompassing all aspects of IS Infrastructure (Service Management, Networks, Storage, Data Protection, Servers and Desktops)
  • Very good vendor, customer service and relationship skills required (internal and external clients)
  • Ability to understand technical issues and develop innovative means to address
  • Knowledge of and experience with pro-active, predictive and preventative maintenance strategies
  • Ability to perform assessments and translate findings into justifiable recommendations and right-fit corrective actions using a risk-based approach
  • Ability to learn from others and to adopt and incorporate best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to identify both tactical and strategic improvement opportunities
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and develop technical staff
  • Competency in making recommendations for decisions
  • Understanding of risk management and decision making
  • Sound knowledge & hands on experience with EMC storage technologies
  • EMC Certification more than one area – Specialist or Expert level in at least one area
  • Enterprise Class Storage Area Networking experience (FiberChannel Directors and Switches, zoning, etc)
  • Extensive experience in the installation, maintenance, operation, tuning, and troubleshooting enterprise class storage and backup environments.
  • Proven ability to work in a high pressure environment with multiple tasks, changing priorities, and changing resources
