Position: Employment Counselor - Nanaimo
Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre (IDHHC) is a non-profit, social service agency serving the needs of d/Deaf, Deaf Blind, Deafened and Hard of Hearing individuals and their families on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. We are currently seeking a dynamic and energetic person to fill the .6 fte ( 3 days a week) for an Employment Counselor – Nanaimo / Mid-Island area.
Under the WorkBC Employment Program of BC (EPBC), IDHHC Employment Counselors assess client skills and career goals and provide one-to-one support in developing a detailed action plan to reach employment objectives. This position helps assess vocational and training opportunities for clients of the organization and supports clients in learning duties and associated behaviors that lend themselves to obtaining and retaining employment.
This position is supervised by the Employment Program Coordinator in Victoria and works from the Nanaimo IDHHC offices to service clients in Nanaimo and Duncan.
Qualifications include: a degree in counseling, social work, or related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. At least three to five years previous direct employment program delivery experience with the target client group with a demonstrated working knowledge of specific community based programs and related government and community support services systems. Knowledge of Deaf Culture, hearing loss and its implications, proficient in American Sign Language, written, and spoken English. A valid BC Driver’s License is required.
