A small Hospital has grown to be a big hospital .
Registered Nurse (Current Employee), Kelowna, BCJanuary 31, 2014
Pros: flexible hours
Cons: emergency is busy, breaks are an option .....
During my 10 years I have been witnessed to immense growth at KGH . When I started it was small hospital with an ICU that was at times 1/2 empty. Emergency was slow . A trauma was a "big deal". Now we have a Cardiac Center attached to it . UBCO has Medical and Nursing Programs working within it . The Emergency has doubled it's number of patient visits – more... . It's become a busy busy place. Occupansy is at 100 % most days . Itis in short like any other hospital found in a bigger city . – less

Helpful, knowledgeable work mates. Clean, organized work bench.
Work Practicum (Former Employee), Vernon, BCJune 17, 2013
Pros: free lunch when you travelled 50km one way to job site
Cons: not a full 8 hour shift
Typical day is making the rounds in the hospital. Finding out what equipment went down and needs to be repaired. Often find myself looking up device manuals on the computer system and troubleshooting device failure. Every day I did at least one preventative maintenance on some type of medical device, most often vital signs monitors. I went on a few – more... road trips to satellite renal dialysis sites and worked on Gambro devices and x-ray equipment at smaller clinics.

It is a well managed shop. My co-workers were very open to questions and helped me learn how to log work orders and request parts using their AssetPlus computer system. The hardest part of the job was that it involved a lot of sitting at the bench. I like to remain active so sitting often can be a challenge for me. The most enjoyable part of the job is when I got to solder something on a device. – less

Unique job, involved identifying people who sold cigarettes to minors
Tobacco Test Shopper (Former Employee), Vernon, BCMay 22, 2013
Pros: free lunches, fun and interesting
Cons: angry clerks
This job was a unique undercover experience in which I had to attempt to buy cigarettes from every retailer in the north Okanagan. Since I was underage at the time, if they sold to me they were breaking the law and would be subject to a fine. I had to write down the features of the person who sold to me so that they could be later charged with the offense. – more... I also had to insure that they had the proper signage and concealed their tobacco products from view. The coworkers were great. We would just listen to music in the car driving from store to store and stop for lunch halfway through the day. The hardest part of the job was dealing with people who were mad at me for trying to buy cigarettes. One clerk said I was banned from the SuperStore gas bar for life but he didn't own it and I've been back there since. The most enjoyable part was catching people selling to me who were known to sell to minors often and knowing that they would be properly fined to their actions. – less

Cook/ Housekeeping/Perioperative Cleaner (Former Employee), Kelowna, BCNovember 7, 2012
Pros: the wage and benefits and working with the other staff and patients
Cons: managment politics
I work full time as a housekeeper as you need to build senority to bid into a fulltime cook positon. I occasionally get pulled from my housekeeping job to fill in for cooks on vacation etc. the managment is strict. the hardest part of my job is the politics that are involved with working in a union environment. the most enjoyable part of my job is working – more... with the patients and the other staff who also enjoy their jobs. – less

Very friendly workplace
Nursing Assistant (Former Employee), Trail, BCOctober 10, 2012
It is a friendly workplace. I have learned that it is essential to listen to the resident's needs and wishes and that you need to make sure that they feel at home. It is our job to make sure they feel welcome and that we attend to their needs. Communication among co-workers is crucial. The most difficult aspect of this job is that it is very physical – more... and takes a toll on the body. I enjoy interacting with the residents and listening to their life stories. – less

It is a good company, but not much room for advancement in my field.
Chief engineer / Shift Engineer (Current Employee), Williams Lake, BCAugust 23, 2012
Pros: stable job. recesion proof.
Cons: no room for advancement, and the pay is below average.
My typical day is pretty much the same as most power engineers. I work with boilers, and fan systems, chillers, cooling towers, pretty much anything to do with the physical plant. The hardest part of the job is not being able to advance. I love the field I am in but unfortunately the plant I am at is not large enough for me to get my next ticket. The – more... most enjoyable part of my job would be all the people. The staff here are amazing. – less
