Great crew environment
Plant Operator (Former Employee), Cold Lake OperationsMay 5, 2014
Pros: great work environment
Cons: the culture. still old mentality
At this company you will work 12 hour shifts, on a 5/4, 4/5 rotation. You can expect to work night shifts once you are qualified to work in all units.

A typical day at Imperial can get really busy as you have to write permits first thing in the morning, followed by a morning meeting to discuss the days work in each units, but it can also be followed by a few welcomed slack days.

While at one of the plants, I've learned to work in all 3 units. I was also blessed to be trained by this company in the art of working safely and to look after your fellow team mates.

Co-workers were the greatest as most had plenty of experience to draw from. Really fun environment with great co-workers.

The hardest part of the job is to be available at multiple work sites within your unit when a lot of things are happening at the same time. Being safe becomes more so a priority and communicating with co-workers and contractors alike is very important. Besides having to do your own work, dealing with other priorities can be stressful, making this I think the most difficult part of the job.

Getting together with co-workers and management on a scheduled event such as playing golf and other extra curricular activities is the greatest part I think.

Exemplary work environment conducive to successful building of customer service skills
Attendant (Current Employee), Surrey, BCNovember 26, 2015
Pros: Varied clientele, quick pace, flexible scheduling.
Cons: No breaks.
Esso/On the Run, a subsidiary of Imperial Oil, is an exemplary place to work and comes highly recommended for all of the skills one can develop there. The average day consists of interactions with approximately 300 customers and forces one to think quickly on their feet and adapt their approach to a very diverse group of customers so as to speed up the process yet still leave customers feeling happy.
The management was exceptional, with the owner/manager ensuring he himself helped out during the weekdays and checked in on weekends. This helped to keep staff morale elevated.
The coworkers were a great group as well, mainly of South Asian descent but full of enthusiasm for working and a willingness to learn on the fly.
The hardest part of the job would arguably be the lack of breaks, with a lone attendant unable to close down the store to take a quick break. Fortunately, this was rectified by the attendant being allowed to take multiple moments to collect themselves in between customers, effectively serving as replacements for one long extended break.

Technically Inclined Work Environment
Technical Contact Engineer (Former Employee), Sarnia, ONJanuary 4, 2015
Pros: satisfying real-time results from work done.
Cons: technically difficult position.
Computerized tech support is surprisingly useful within Imperial Oil and Exxon Mobil, although it may take a day or two for the knowledgeable agent to contact you.

Typically 8 am - 5 pm with a 30 min lunch. Solving difficult operational problems in the Tech Contact role. Management is understanding, and co-workers are willing to assist when appropriate.

It was sometimes hard to accept a shortcut simplification solution due to the time permitted, when a more technically accurate solution was in sight.

Helping solve problems that co-workers had been struggling with was enjoyable.

Operations (several positions in the Refinery) (Former Employee), IOL Nanticoke RefineryFebruary 5, 2013
Pros: good compensation - benefits.
Very challenging and interesting work - definitely an environment to learn new things everyday.

Management always stressed Safety was number #1. Have worked for other companies , however would have to say IOL is at the top of list when it comes to safety.

Hardest part of any job is not so much the technical side, but the interactions with other people.

Most enjoyed working on new projects - always challenging and very rewarding when project is completed.
