Our client is a leader in the online media space located in the downtown area. Currently hiring a Development Manager, we are actively seeking this individual to start on as quickly as possible. This manager will have a background in the Java space.


o Manage a team of approximately 8 individuals involved in software development projects, new business implementations, and second-tier support of existing applications

o This is a hands-on role and while you must be able to delegate appropriately, you may also be directly involved in the execution and/or coordination of the work

o Perform regular reviews, including annual performance reviews and other human resource responsibilities, for all team members

o Encourage team member growth and skill development

o Maintain the existing software base, including debugging issues and fixing bugs, typically on a tier 2 basis (escalations from the 1st tier support team)

o Provide technical direction and oversight, ensuring conformance to architectural standards and established processes

o Ensure project artifacts align with the prescribed enterprise architecture as provided by the Architecture team and CTO

o Provide a leadership role on project and task initiatives by interacting with Product Owners and help to coordinate and mentor the efforts of developers

o Work within the technology management group to set direction on key process initiatives and ensure compliance within the team

o Take responsibility for monitoring work backlogs and assist with the prioritization and allocation of that work

o Liaise with other development teams as necessary to address cross-project interdependencies

o Monitor, administer and optimize applications running on Linux

o Lead detailed design activities, development, unit testing, code walkthroughs and documentation efforts

o Identify harmonization and reusability opportunities throughout the developed artifacts

o Assist with the identification of SR&ED-eligible work, and associated documentation


o University degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related IT discipline

o Excellent leadership and communication skills; comfortable interfacing with Product Owners and colleagues in other departments

o Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills

o 3+ years of leadership experience in a sizeable team environment either as a team lead or manager

o Java (JEE) experience building or maintaining Java-based client server systems for large scale high availability web-based services, ideally with JBoss AS7 or AS8

o Strong MySQL database experience (or similar relational databases) and Web services (SOAP, Restful) knowledge

o Must be a highly motivated self-starter comfortable working in a fast paced environment and must have excellent time-management skills

o Must have experience configuring, monitoring, and debugging applications running on Linux-based systems

o While the majority of this job can be performed during standard business hours, there may be a need to occasionally be available to address urgent issues or assist with upgrades during off hours


o In-depth familiarity with Amazon Web Services including EC2, S3, and Route 53 is a major asset

o Experience working with an Agile development methodology is a significant asset

o Exposure to Hibernate, iBATIS, and PHP

o A detailed understanding of HTML5, Javascript, and Adobe Flex
