Operations Technician

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS POSITION REQUIRES AN ABSA THIRD CLASS POWER ENGINEERING CERTIFICATE. CANDIDATES THAT DO NOT HAVE THIS CERTIFICATE WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED

As an Operations Technician, you will participate as a member of a Self-Managed Team (SMT), and will be accountable for team and individual goals associated with all aspects of the safe and optimal operation and control of plant equipment. The Operations Technician will be required to troubleshoot control and equipment problems and make sound decisions based on operating guidelines and principles, while working in accordance with INEOS Safe Work Practices. You will be expected to apply demonstrated technology and make use innovative leading edge technology. You are expected to maintain all products to the specified quality parameters at all times.

In addition, as a member of SMT, the Operation Technician will be responsible for execution of the daily business instructions that are provided by the Operations Engineers’. The Operations Technicians participate in team activities related to planning, establishing team goals, setting priorities, budgeting, establishing key performance indicators and measurement indicators. The SMWT works with other plant teams, management and contract staff, in creating and maintaining safety standards, establishing and maintaining a customer focus and quality, sharing learning’s, and creating conditions to maximize individual and team commitment. The principal accountabilities for the Operation Technicians are:

  • Ensure daily business instruction issued by the Operations Engineers as completed.
  • Ensure all products meet the specified quality parameters.
  • Ensure that all effluent streams meet the specified quality parameters.
  • Monitor unit operations and troubleshoot process problems.
  • Make sound decisions based on operating guidelines and principles
  • Take leadership role on shifts for unit specific direction
  • Lead and execute unit objectives for the shift to meet the overall production and budget goals
  • Lead safety inspections in area of responsibility, and execute safe work practices
  • Identification and rectification of unsafe work practice
  • Knowledge of Safe Work Practices, Standard Operating Procedures, and Special Permits
  • Complete unit HSE and Process Safety Checks
  • Work with Maintenance and Engineering for the execution of various maintenance tasks
  • Work well with others under any situation.
  • Must participate in the training of new operators
  • Must qualify in sufficient process areas to match our pay progression system.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Principal duties include:

  • Operates the following types of processes and equipment: reactor and cooling tower, flash and caustic wash, rotating and reciprocating compressors and refrigeration system, peaking and chain growth wash, distillation, tank farm, waste water, sewer system, and furnace dowtherm system BFW.
  • Collects samples at various stages in the process and correlates sample analysis with observations of equipment performance and instrument readings.
  • Maintains logs on readings, production rates, and equipment conditions.
  • Performs startups, shutdowns, and adjusts controls both manually and electronically to regulate flows, temperatures, levels, PM, and pressures of process streams at the desired condition.
  • Initiates and participates in troubleshooting activities to resolve current problems and to prevent re-occurrences.
  • Prepares equipment and process for maintenance.
  • Assists in the development and modification of operating procedures.
  • Supports and contributes to the implementation of the HSE management system.
  • Performs some DCS functions.
  • Participates in the emergency response system including fire fighting duties.
  • Performs some maintenance and preventive maintenance duties.
  • Maintains good housekeeping practices.
  • Fulfills team member requirements associated with a SMWT.
  • Performs other duties as required.

SMT Requirements:

  • Manage safety and work related performance issues. Team must work with TE rep to remedy situation. If necessary work with line manager and HR to implement progressive discipline. i.e. verbal warnings, written warnings, suspension w/o pay
  • Implement Drug and Alcohol testing when required
  • Set Relay objectives for the team each quarter
  • Assign team members to special projects example – Tar Coordinators, Reactor Wash SPA
  • Assign team functions to team members
  • Assign special roles to team members – ERT, UOL, SME, Steam Engineer, etc
  • Manage team training plans to meet the criteria defined by the Ops training department and assign areas to team members as required. If team members are not progressing in areas to meet training plan then team must work with TE rep to remedy situation including involvement of management using progressive discipline
  • Attend all network meetings or send delegate or send detailed email to network champion stating team’s position
  • Debrief team on network meetings and document date
  • Respond to all action items and email requests

Requirements and Qualifications

An individual at this level requires a high school diploma, a minimum 3rd class power engineering certificate, as well as required company courses and training programs, exhibits a high degree of computer literacy, is fully conversant with developed and leading edge technology, is able to perform the most complex operating functions independently, has a detailed understanding of safety, equipment, and emergency response procedures, has developed cross-functional job skills, and exhibits highly effective interpersonal communication skills. A minimum of 5 years of operating experience in a large petrochemical or gas plant or refinery is required. Previous board experience is desired.
