Three members of the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph founded Hotel Dieu in 1948 as a 29-bed maternity hospital in the Woodruff Mansion across the street from the current hospital building.
Since that time, Hotel Dieu grew to become a full-scale community hospital providing surgical, medical and emergency care as well as several unique regional programs with more than 1,000 employees.
Always trying to fulfill unmet healthcare needs in the city of St. Catharines and the Region of Niagara, Hotel Dieu continued to, bring new services and programs to the area, including; dialysis, oncology, diabetes education, children's developmental assessment services, autism consultation and addiction services.
Today, Hotel Dieu is working on the transition from providing acute care services to providing complex care and rehabilitation. On August 8, 2005, Hotel Dieu will assume governance and management of the Shaver Hospital and Niagara Rehabilitation facilities as a result of a local solution to hospital restructuring in St. Catharines. The Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph, the Board of Trustees and the management of Hotel Dieu fully embrace this change and look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead.
The Niagara Health System will manage the Hotel Dieu's current programs and buildings on August 8, 2005. – less–ZoomInfo
