Role: Regulatory Affairs Specialist

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will help develop and implement quality assurance programs and procedures to assure conformance of incoming ingredients, materials and finished products to establish specifications and quality standards.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
a) Labeling, Claims and Compliance
Review compositional requirements to meet Canadian and US legislation and guidelines for food products within the applicable laws
Conduct regulatory reviews of food packaging, copy and marketing material including nutrition information, and nutrient content claims, standards of identity, romance copy, product names, and branding.
Evaluate ingredient and nutrient profile of food products with internal standards
Accountable for assessing, coordinating and compiling deficiency responses in a timely manner
Works with other functional areas to resolve issues related to information for regulatory submissions
Review of change control documents
Approval of change control documents and quality notifications as assigned
b) Emerging Regulations and Technical Guidance
Keep abreast of emerging nutrition and issues to determine business impact, implications, and opportunities
Provide expertise and guidance on nutrition and regulatory affairs to marketing, product development, quality assurance, and commercial teams
Liaise with government contacts for day to day interpretation of various regulations and guidelines
c) Product Submissions
Responsible for the preparation and peer review of quality regulatory submissions for various markets to ensure timely approval
Responsible for the maintenance and timely completion of regulatory documents to support regulatory compliance in various markets
Qualifications:
Post secondary Degree in food science, nutrition or a related field
Minimum of five years experience in Nutrition and Regulatory Affairs in the food industry, preferably in meat or dairy manufacturing / processing industry
Proficient knowledge of food-related Canadian and US legislation, policies, and guidelines regarding food composition, nutrient content, and labeling requirements
Familiarity with CFIA, USDA and FDA requirements
Proficient knowledge in nutrition, food chemistry/composition and methods of analysis
Knowledge of impending government policies and initiatives with creative regulatory problem solving
Supervisory experience of teams would be a strong asset
