Grain Farmers of Ontario is seeking a highly motivated individual to lead the development of partnerships and initiatives related to the environment, sustainability, food safety and biosecurity. These areas are the key components in developing and promoting a successful business environment for Ontario grain farmers. Ontario’s corn, soybean and wheat farmers are stewards of several million acres of land in Ontario and rely on the natural environment for their business success. This position will be responsible for helping farmers and our value chain partners understand the complexity of environmental factors around grain production and develop pro-active win-win solutions.
This position will be a key part of our Research and Market Development team and reports to the Manager, Market Development and Research.
Build coalitions with our grain industry supply chain partners to promote and develop practical environmental, biosecurity and food safety programs and initiatives that will help Ontario grain farmers capture market opportunities.
Lead efforts related to market oriented sustainability initiatives, including active participation in developing sustainability and environmental benchmarking and certification systems.
Provide technical expertise and analysis on the impact of existing and proposed environmental, food safety, sustainability and biosecurity policies and regulations that could affect Ontario grain farmers.
Develop reports and presentations to communicate sustainability efforts to Ontario grain farmers, industry partners, customers and government.
Proactively reach out to stakeholder groups to communicate environmental stewardship investments and the sustainability profile of grain farms.
Participate in government and industry working groups that assist Ontario grain farmers’ goal of continuing to protect soil, air, and water while increasing productivity and profitability.
Identify research gaps related to the environment and provide input on research priorities.
Background in agriculture and strong practical understanding of the Ontario agricultural industry
University degree in a related field and experience in a similar or related role
Polished presentation and excellent interpersonal skills
Knowledge and experience working with provincial and federal government ministries, agencies and committees, including funding programs.
Excellent written and verbal command of the English language, with a strong understanding of tone required for various audiences
Effective time-management skills and the ability to prioritize many projects simultaneously
High level of proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Ability to work successfully under pressure and in stressful situations
Capability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team
Must possess a Valid Ontario Driver’s License and have access to a vehicle
Flexibility to travel (up to 25%) and willing to work outside of normal office hours when required
